Moving large mailbox
Hi We have a large shared mailbox that we are going to be moving between regions (UK to Germany). It will be moved from LDN-Exch1 to BER-Exch1, both are Exchange 2007 servers. The mailbox is 20GB in size so will take a while to move. Questions - 1. Let's say the mailbox move takes 5 hours and we start at midday Saturday. If the move finishes at 5pm on Saturday, and what time can users be able to access it? Immediately, or do we need to allow time for AD replication between London and Germany? I'm thinking in terms of the AD account of the mailbox being updated with the new location of the mailbox. 2. During the 5 hr mailbox move, what happens to emails sent to that mailbox? 3. During the 5 hr mailbox move, is it possible to set a redirect to mails to go elsewhere, or will this cause more problems?

20GB is quite abit, You can prdict your timings as you know your network bandwidth/latency. After the mailbx move is complete, then can access it straight away, just not during the move. May have some issue with OWA if conditions are true - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124797(EXCHG.80).aspx Mail will be queued for delivery. Will cause more issue than it's worth, but you can do this, using transport rules. Some info - http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2006/10/27/3395377.aspx Sukh

Thanks, regarding #2, if they are all held at the HT, then when they eventually get delivered to the mailbox, their timestamp (Received:) will be different from the time they were sent, am I right? Is there any way to rectify this? Would adding a Sent field to Outlook help, or would this reflect the time the message was accepted by the database too?

Yes, it wil be different. If you view the message in Outlook it should show the time Exch delievered the messgage. If you open the message and look at the "sent:" area on the mail message, it should show the time it was actually sent. You can use see from here when the original message was sent. Or as you say, add the Sent field in the Columns. Sukh

Hi, In exchange 2007, we cannot access the mailbox during the mailbox moving time. I would use the following method to move the mailbox if it need to take a long time. 1. Export all the messages to a PST file. 2. Remove all the messages from the mailbox 3. move the mailbox (because there is no database in this mailbox, the process of moving should be very quick) 4. copy the PST file to the target place. (During this time, users can still receive or send the message, they only cant't see the pervious message) 5. import and merge the PST file to the target mailbox. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. @Jason - Can you explain your reasoning for marking this post as you haven't really answered the OP's questions rather partly and given a method which you would recommend?Sukh
