Moving Exchange server 2007 to new hardware with new name
Moving Exchange server 2007 to new hardware with new name.
We currently 2 storage groups and first one has mail database( currentsize is around 50GB)and second one has public folder database.
1. What is the logic of creating storage groups and creating databases in storage groups.
I was thinking before moving if I can create another storage group and divide mailboxes into 2 storage groups for optimisation purposes.
2. Is it possible to move complete storage group or only mailboxes can be moved.
Finally we are going to delete the old exchange server 2007 which is on the old hardware.
Thx.

You can simply install the second server and create SG and DB as you feel comfortable with.
Next step is to move mailboxes and replicate PF to the new server.
Routing of mail and access from Internet should be moved to the new server sometime before/middle or after you move mailboxes.
Last step is to uninstall the old server.

Are you in coexistence? Then this would help you
How to Remove the First Exchange 2007 Server in a Coexistence Scenario

If not coexistence then you can skip step 3 to configure routing group connector in above article.

Yes it is really beneficial to divide mailboxes in different storage groups and databases.
It would be helpful when you want to implement LCR for disk resilience because LCR can be enabled on the storage group when you have only one mailbox database in it.
It would be easier while recovering the database from corruption and only some of the users are affected who all are in that mailbox database OR restoring it from backup since transaction logs are also divided based on storage groups.
You can manage mailboxes in better way if you segregate those into two different mailbox database or storage group (like normal users, vips etc..)
2. Is it possible to move complete storage group or only mailboxes can be moved.
You can move mailboxes from one server to another and that doesnt require downtime of your database. (You dont have to dismount the database)
Or another option is, you can move the mailbox database with database portability but that requires the stores to be dismounted.

I was trying to replicate public folders from First server to new server. I have few questions:
1. On the new server I should have a storage group with public folder database. Replicating will not make the public folder databse?
2 I created the second storage for public folder databse and created public folder database on the new server.
Using toolbox I am trying to replicate from old server to new server. I right click on the public folder and click on properties so that I can add new server in the replication server list. Why is it showing the old server in the list. Is it going to replicate on its own public folder database. It should not show old server. Can I delete the old server from the list.It should show only the new server. Similarly on the new server it should show old server in the list. I am confuse, please guide.
Thx

Hi,
1. Yes, you need to create a new PF database on destination server.

2. Did you use MoveAllReplicas.ps1 script to move public folder as per article? That will move all replica instead of adding both.
