Move E2K7 from a DC to correct a bad install
I have a not long started a new job as a net admin and have a really basic problem and need the correct steps!! (I do hope I have this in the right place)First we have a AD with 4 servers installedAD, SQL, TS1, TS2 as can be seen from the names of the server the roles that they perform. From this we have E2K7 SP1 installed on the AD (I know this is not correct and I'm trying to correct it)Things done so far;1) I have setup a new server and made that the new DC for the domain (moved the FSMO rolls) unable to move the GC at this point because Exchange 2007 wants that roll on the same server as it's installed on because it's a DC.2) Setup a new server standalone ready to take the roll of Edge Transport, have another server ready to install the rest of exchange on as I want it of the DC ASAP.Questions1) can I just installthe edge transport roll on this new serverthen remove that roll from the AD server?2) can I then install exchange on the other server and setup edge sync to the new server? Also can I do this without interruption of any service? As we have multiple retail store in remote location that can't be without email.RegardsBrent

Issue description: Correct the bad exchange installation on the DC Id like to simulate your current environment, please correct me if Ive misunderstood it: Old DC (Name: AD) - has been installed exchange 2007 (Role: Unknown) and GC role New DC (Name: New AD) - has been got all FSMO roles from AD, but not play as a GC Plan: New server (Name: Member1) plan to install exchange 2007 (Mailbox, CAS and HUB) New server (Name: Member2) plan to install exchange 2007 (Edge) Check info: 1. Please tell the windows server version 2. Quote: unable to move the GC at this point because Exchange 2007 wants that roll on the same server as it's installed on because it's a DC Please follow KB 313994 to create the new GC and remove the old GC Notes: If you have problem about moving the GC, please collect the related error info and post the question to the Windows Server forum which would be the best place to obtain the resolution Q: can I just install the edge transport roll on this new server then remove that roll from the AD server Can you explain more about this question? Edge server role cant co-exist with other server roles, but from your words, it seems that edge role had been installed on AD before. Which roles have you installed on the AD before? Q: can I then install exchange on the other server and setup edge sync to the new server Yes, we can install exchange on other servers and use the edge sync just like the simulation above, member1 can start edge sync with member2 Q: can I do this without interruption of any service? No, I dont think that we can do that without interrupting all mail services, like move mailboxes and the following things: If we deploy the edge server, the MX record needs to be pointed to the public IP of edge server (Assume theres no ISA server) The record for OWA will need to be pointed to new exchange server as well If outlook anywhere were being used, we also need to change the A record of AutoDiscover (Assume theres no ISA server) The certificate has to be changed for the new exchange server name If users are using POP3 account, we need to change the server name to the new server (member1) Resources: How to Completely Remove Exchange 2007 from a Server How to remove Exchange 2007 from a computer

hi,Edge Transport server role must be installed on its hardware and not member of the domain. so you can not install Edge Transport on your new server. (new server also a domain controller)please look at ;http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124701.aspxand reccomendations for installing Edge Transport Server role ;http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6187455.htmlregards,Exchange - MVP | www.cozumpark.com | www.mumincicek.com

The old (current e2k7) server is a domain controller it was the only Dc in the domain, untill I installed one more then moved the FSMO roles over to it. It is the only e2k7 server in the domain/forest and has all the exchange roles on it. My goal is to remove the edge transport role to another stand alone server not in the domain. then I want to move the other roles to another (temp)new server that is a member server of the domain. then I want to run DCPROMO and remove the old server re-build it and then move the mailbox, CAS and Hub exchange roles back to it. the reason for using the temp server is that it's is not as well spec'd as the current server so I need to reuse it.Windows version is Server 2008 standard on all servers. I know how to setup a GC and have done so but the issue is that when you install e2k7 onto a domain controller it must be a GC and I have setup another GC and then turned off the GC on the e2k7 Dc but this creates a application log error that states the as e2k7 is installed on adomain controller it must be a "Global Catalog". Thanks for the info on interruptions I was thing this would be the case as well. the public IP address won't chage as that is the firewall thath then forwards to the internal server. and no I don't have ISA server the internal doamin namde was setup as .local so that has created it's own problems as well with autodiscover for outlook anywhere (which I have only just managed to get working). Please note that I am trying to fix this I didn't build it... and as such I want to follow MS best practices, and I know that exchange shouldn't be on a DC and that the edge transport role shouldn't be on the exchange server CAS HUB server (how did they get there in the first place?) I always thought that once you selected edge the other roles were not available in the install process? but I haven't setup e2k7 (from scratch)forover 2 years now.

Since we cant unchecked GC from AD, why dont we uninstall exchange from it at first? I suggest that we build the new exchange servers, and then move all required data from AD. After that, remove exchange from AD, then we can turn off the GC, depromo the DC and rebuild it
