Missing log files on Exchange 2007 under SBS 2008
Running Exchange 2007 SP3 on a Small Business Server 2008 (SBS2008) box I am having problems with the Windows Server Backup: Shortly after the backup starts each evening there are several messages in the Application event log stating that log files are missing and cannot be used. The same twelve log files are mentioned repeatedly. Though the backup in the SBS2008 Console shows as successful further investigation in the Windows Server Backup and event logs shows that Exchange is not being backed up correctly and that there are a multitude of log files sitting in the "D:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group" folder (more that 15,000 log files!). This is one the event log messages listing one of the twelve missing log files: Log Name: Application Source: ESE Date: 19/01/2011 18:10:40 Event ID: 518 Task Category: Logging/Recovery Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: XXXXX Description: eseutil (9592) The log file \\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy119\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\Mailbox\First Storage Group\E0000007205.log is missing (error -528) and cannot be used. If this log file is required for recovery, a good copy of the log file will be needed for recovery to complete successfully. This is a later event log message indiacting a problem with the backup: Log Name: Application Source: Microsoft-Windows-Backup Date: 19/01/2011 18:19:57 Event ID: 565 Task Category: None Level: Error Keywords: User: SYSTEM Computer: XXXXX Description: Consistency check for component '0592e919-282b-4afe-a417-190eae22a681'\'Microsoft Exchange Server\Microsoft Information Store\STIRLING' failed. Application 'Exchange' will not be avaliable in the backup done at time '19/01/2011 18:00:14' The system is fully patched with Microsoft updates. The users are not having any noticeable problems with their mailboxes. Why would these log files be missing? Can I do anything with ESEUTIL or any other procedure to get round these missing log files and clear out the log files that are there?

Hi Have you maybe a file-level antivirus installed and not done the exclusions? Here's a link for the exclusions that should be done http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb332342%28EXCHG.80%29.aspxJonas Andersson MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010 | Blog: http://www.testlabs.se/blog | Follow me on twitter: jonand82

Hi The server has AVG installed. I had previously followed their guidance on setting up exclusions for Exchange Server 2007. I also temporarily uninstalled AVG and ran the backup. However, I still got the same errors. I also dismounted the Mailbox and Public Folder databases and in the Toolbox Database Recovery Management ran the "Verify database and transaction log files" option. Bothe databases showed up as being clean. Is there any way to get rid of the thousands of transaction logs without getting the backup to do so? There is obviously no problem with the database files and so it would be best if I could start the transaction logs afresh.

Hi Well, you can change to circular logging on the database properties and then dismount and mount Then the logs should be gone, then try to take a full backup again But when that's done change it back so you will have the full log set if anything goes wrong Also when you've changed it back to "normal" transaction logs, start a full backup and verify that it works Keep us updated and good luck! :)Jonas Andersson MCTS: Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010 | MCITP: EMA 2007/2010 | Blog: http://www.testlabs.se/blog | Follow me on twitter: jonand82

Hi Jonas Backup worked with no errors after circular logging turned on and also when I returned to "normal" transaction logs. I will monitor the situation in a week's time to ensure I don't get another build-up of log files. Thanks for your help.
