Missing Emails/Folders on Mailbox (Exchange 2007)
We rebuild a PC of one of ours users yesterday (from XP/Office 2k3 to 7/Office 2k10) and this morning when they downloaded their Exchange mailbox nearly all their files/folders were missing. We have the archive and the emails are not there/all
their folder structure from the Inbox is missing. We set-up a RSG and restored from backup but the backup has the same issue/apparently going back several months. Now we don't know where the emails were/are? Is there any chance of getting the emails back/way
of tracing where they went at least?

Hi PanosE,
I want to verify some information from you,
1. Did the users receive their email and keep those in pst file on local computer?
2. Did you confirm that the server keeped the emails copy on the server when you did the bakup task

Seems like the user was using PST files as you;ev tried to perform a restore from several months ago (before the client upgrade) and you see the same structure in the mailbox. The only way you can probably recover this is, if you made a backup or you will
have to use 3rd party tools to recover the pst from the harddisk. Failing that, you can always send the harddisk to a data receovery specialist who may be able to recover the data for you.

1) We use cached exchange mode. The user is sure that they kept their whole folder structure in their Inbox.
2) We backup all the storage groups/this worked sucesfully. Looking at this user's mailbox there were some emails there (about 500) but much less than expected/none of their folders.

They are adament that they kept everything in their Inbox. They do have a archive/pst but this doesn't have the recent emails - interestingly it does contain the expected folder structure. Is it possible that their Exchange Inbox is somehow corrupt?

well, if you think about when you client upgrade was performed, it seems this is only when the emails got lost, and you can see the folder structire in the PST file. Wha are the chances exchange mailbox corrult at the same time v the PST was lost
as per upgrade. More than likely pst I reckon.Sukh

In my opinion, the users' word always not very believable. :)
Per your description, the outlook client use cache mode, as normal, if the users did not move the emails to the local PST file, there would are some emails keep in the inbox folder on the server side.
And per your referred, if recreate the outlook profile, the outlook would sync the emails on the server side, but there are no other emails left.
And if you have do the correct backup and restore, and could not found the emails, so that means when your did the backup, in actually, there were no as many emails as you expected.
Sukh 's suggestion maybe good, do the disk data recovery.

Thanks guys. In the end the user decided it wasn't woth the effort so we're leaving it at that for now. A bit worrying though - we'll keep an eye on their mailbox for a while to make sure it's working OK.
