Migrating mail merge template data source

I'm migrating database used by mail merge templates from one server to another.

To my knowledge, I have to re-run mail merge wizard to configure the data source to access the new server. Is this the right way to do the work?

No original odc files are available. I created odc file through mail merge wizard. But seems during run time, the odc file is not required when Word documents are generated using the mail merge template document. There's no problem even the odc file is deleted. Is this correct?

Hi James

Unless you're specifically looking for a programming solution - and I don't get that impression - the better place for you to ask this would be the IT Pro forum on TechNet. I can move your question there, if you wish. That would be the better place to get information about odc files, etc.

From the programming perspective:

If we're talking about *.dotx (and not the old *.dot) file format, fastest and most efficient would be to edit the file directly, outside the Word application, by working with the Word Open XML. C# or VB.NET can do this using the Open XML SDK, but any other programming language that can work with Zip packages and XML can handle it, as well.
