Migrating from Server 2008 R2 with Exchange 2010 to Server 2012 R2 with Exchange 2013

As the title states, I am in the process of moving to Exchange 2013 from Exchange 2010.

This is a partially live upgrade and I want to ensure little to no downtime.

During the prerequisite check I get this message:

"Warning:
Setup will prepare the organization for Exchange 2013 by using 'Setup /PrepareAD'. No Exchange 2007 server roles have been detected in this topology. After this operation, you will not be able to install any Exchange 2007 servers."

As I stated, we do not have any 2007 Exchange servers, only a single 2010 server. This being my first 2013 Exchange install, I am not sure if this is a "point of no return" where it makes AD changes that will effect our current production network.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

A few things, once you run the schema and ad preps you cannot install any new servers with a legacy version (pre-2013) of Exchange.  Before you get to far into the process I suggest that you make sure you plan everything out properly and before proceeding any further you should at a minimum check out the Exchange Deployment Assistant:

and some step by step links:

All of these links should give you everything you need to make your migration to Exchange 2013 as seamless as  possible.

I appreciate the valuable information and I am looking through it now.

I have updated Exchange 2010 to SP3+ and am installing Exchange 2013 with SP1.

I am following a couple of guides and am rolling right through without issue. I just wanted to make sure that when I install 2013, it won't cause any issues with my current 2010 Exchange server.

As long as you follow the guides you should be good :).  Obviously if there is an underlying issue with your AD environment that could change.

I would probably run the Schema and AD preps a day or two before just to be safe.  Also I would install a newer version of Exchange, like CU9 (there's a patch in CU9 for mailbox migrations creating duplicate folders) assuming your addins and everything else that integrates with Exchange support it.

I want to ensure little to no downtime.

The above suggested references by Hinte looks good to get this job done.

You can also checkout this petenetlive article that covers all the required aspects to complete a migration from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013: http://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0000788.htm

Beside this, if you want to accomplish this task with no downtime, you may give a shot to this automated tool available @ (http://www.exchangemigrationtool.com/) that allows to migrate users mailboxes between two exchange server in flawless manner.

Hi,

This is only a warning that tell you there is no Exchange 2007 in your environment. If an Exchange 2007 server was not introduced prior to Exchange 2010, then you were unable to go back and add it later.

This would not affect the migratioin from Exchange 2010 to 2013.
