Migrating Exchange 2010 (tied to Active Directory) to 2013 (without Active Directory)

Hi,

My apologies if this is not the correct section to ask.

So here's the scenario:

I have recently created a NEW Active Directory (will be called AD from hereon) Server (Windows Server 2012 R2) due to the prolonged problem and complexion in the OLD AD Server (Windows Server 2010).

I have re-created all the user from scratch in the NEW AD, to the point that it is now identical to the OLD AD Server (with the exception of the SID)

In addition of that, I have an Exchange server 2010 to manage Email and is connected to the old AD Server (thus using the old AD user as login credential).

And here comes the problem, I am going to migrate the Exchange Server 2013, after the migration succeeded, it will be connected to the new AD instead of the old AD. Is it possible to do such thing? (the final result will be: Mailboxes will be linked to the respective new AD users)

Sorry for the poor explanation.

Please advise,

Thank you very much.

Yes, this is doable.

Depending on the how many users and how much data, you can even have coexistence with the two Exchange systems sharing the same domain name.

When you move users, mailboxes, you can do a local move or a remote move. A local move is within the same Exchange organization. A remote move is between Exchange organizations.

You can share the same domain name for mail delivery by configuring the domain as an Internal Relay domain.

Hi Byron,

Thanks for the swift reply.

My AD server contains approximately 1,000+ users (less than 1,100)

I think I forgot some detail in my explanation, my old AD and exchange server 2010 is tied to (for example) abc.com domain, and my new AD is tied to (for example) abc.co.uk domain.

After I migrate my Exchange Server 2010 to 2013, I want the Exchange Server 2013 released from abc.com and connected to abc.co.id domain instead. Will it mess the whole things up? (since the existing users in newly-migrated Exchange Server 2013 has different SID with the new AD Server)

Thank you very much.

You won't be able to disconnect the Exchange server from one AD forest and simply move it to another AD forest. All of the configuration info for Exchange is in AD.

I'm afraid the only real option is to build a new Exchange organization in the new AD forest and migrate the mailboxes.

So, I'd leave 2010 in the old domain and put 2013 in the new domain to support the migration.

After the migration is complete, you can have both email domains in the 2013 side without

Hi,

Agreed with Byron. We can install the new Exchange 2013 in the new domain abc.co.uk and do a cross forest migration from Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013.

Please make sure your Exchange server is upgraded to the following required version:

Exchange 2013: CU2 or higher
Exchange 2010: SP3 or higher

Here is a article about the cross forest migration for your reference:

Microsoft Exchange 2013 supports mailbox moves and migrations using the Exchange Management Shell, specifically the New-MoveRequest and New-MigrationBatch cmdlets.
