Microsoft Word Starter 2010
I get a message that I must repair the program in the Control Panel. I don't know how to do this.

Go into the control panel and then into Programs and Features (or Add and remove programs in older versions of Windows). The easiest way to find it is to press Start and then search for Uninstall, you should see Programs and Features appear in the list.

In the list of installed programs, find the entry for Microsoft Word / Microsoft Office. Select that near the top of the window you should see next to the Uninstall option either Repair or Change. If Repair then simply click it and follow the prompts, if you only see Change then select that, you'll then get a MS Office / Word window appear giving you options for how you want to proceed, and one of those options will be repair.
