Microsoft Outlook 2010 won't mark a read email as read. The email is still bolding the folder showing 1 unread email.

Unforutnately, Microsoft Outlook 2010 won't mark a read email as read. The email is still bolding the folder showing 1 unread email.

I have right clicked on the email to mark the email as read, however there is only an option to mark the email as unread.

Please assist urgently.

Why do you suspect this specific message to be the issue and not another one?
Do you perhaps have a filter applied to your View which could hide a message that hasn't been marked as read yet?
If this is not your own mailbox but a shared mailbox, it could be that you don't see the message because the message has been marked as Private and the mailbox owner hasn't given you permissions to see Private items.

If you don't really care about finding the message, you could also right click on the folder and choose "Mark All As Read".

Dear Roady,
                   thank you for the reply.

1.  I suspect this specific message to be the issue as there's only one email in this folder.

2. There are no filters on the view which could hide a message that hasn't been marked as read yet.

3. This is my own mailbox.

4. I just tried right clicking on the folder and chose "Mark All as Read" and the issue remains.

Please urgently assist further.

Is this for a POP3 account?
Scan your pst-file for issues with scanpst.exe.

Dear Roady,
                   thanks for the reply.

The email account is a POP/SMTP account going through Gmail into my Outlook 2010.

In that case, scan your pst-file with scanpst.exe like I suggested;

Dear Roady,
                  thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately, the Microsoft Outlook Repair Tool failed.

I went to Windows 7 64-bit PC\Start\Computer\C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office14\SCANPST\Browse...\selected the Outlook Data File\Open\Start

Error prompt came up:
Microsoft Outlook Inbox Repair Tool
The file C:\Users\<name>\Documents\<faulty inbox.pst> is read-only. You can scan this file but you do not have permission to repair it. Do you want to scan the file anyway?

Yes\Repair

Error prompt came up:
Microsoft Outlook Repair Tool
The file C:\Users\<name>\Documents\<faulty inbox.bak>  is read-only. You do not have permission to overwrite it.

OK

The inbox still has the issue.

Please urgently assist further.

Re-installing Outlook 2010 won't help. It's probably the profile or pst/ost file that's broken.

Try removing the profile and then re-do the account setup.

You do this in the Control Panel -> Mail -> Show pofiles - afterwards, start Outlook and setup the account again.

Check the status of the e-mail in Gmail. Is it read?

Dear Welltecie,
                       thank you for your reply.

1. The status of the e-mail in Gmail is fine.

2. I should also mention that all the received and sent emails in gmail are not appearing in Microsoft Outlook 2010.

3. I setup a new profile and the gmail sends and receives fine, however the email folder is nowhere to be seen?

4. Note, I have not removed the old profile as I do not want to lose all my data just yet.

Please urgently assist further.

Hi

We can try to create a new .PST, move this specific email to new .PST folder.

If you can “Mark as Read” this email on new folder, your Old .PST corrupted.

We can move all mails to new folder or use the new .PST and retain the old .PST.

Please take your time to try the suggestions and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If anything is unclear or if there is anything I can do for you, please feel free to let me know.

Best Regards,

William Zhou

Dear William,
                  thank you for your reply.

Unfortunately, there are now 2 emails that cause the issue.

I have created new profiles, new .pst files, reinstalled Windows 7 and Microsoft Outlook 2010.

i think there is some problem with your Outlook's PST file, it can be anything like small damage or severe corruption. you must check it by using inbox repair tool. If there will be an issue it will automatically resolve it.

Outlook issue can be due to :

1)Corrupted PST or OST file

2)Corrupted Outlook User Profile

3)Corrupted Outlook Application

4)Settings Issue

For me, I found the issue was with Settings. There was no READING PANE. In other words the Reading Pane was turned "Off". I simply Used "Bottom" and now I can see my messages shows READ once I click them. Check out if this helps!
