Microsoft Office applications are crashing on launch

Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus applications started crashing today on our workstations running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.  All Office applications such as Word, Excel, OneNote crashes upon launch with the following error: The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005).  The version we were running was 15.0.4727.1003 when we first started experiencing this problem today, we upgraded to the latest 15.0.4745.1001 but the problem still persists.  No major changes have been made to our workstations other than the recent Windows security patch installations that were released few days ago.

I would like to note that we do not have any third-party add-ons installed with our Office applications nor do we have any printer drivers installed on these workstations.

Is anyone else experiencing these issues with Office 365 ProPlus?  Can someone help with solving this issue?

Thanks,

Joe

Same error for me with Excel 2013, Word 2013, Powerpoint 2013 (not sure which version, but "latest") running Win 7 Ultimate 64 bit.  Excel 2010 launches just fine (never uninstalled).

Excel was working on 13 Aug.

In update history, Upgrade to Windows 10 failed on the 13th, then again on the 14th.

Then, KB915597 was installed (and cannot be removed) on the 14th.

Now Office 2013 apps will not launch.

EDIT 1: I just disabled avast (version 10.3.2225, virus definition version 150815-2) temporarily and Excel 2013 and Word 2013 both started correctly.  Powerpoint 2013 still has the same problem.

Occam's razor suggests some conflict with the unremovable Windows Defender update and this version of avast

Same here too, for whole Office Suite ( Office 365 SBP / Windows 8.1 Home 64bit )

Problem also appeared between 13.-14. August id say...

- 15.0.4745.1001 not working anymore

- 15.0.4727.1003 worked flawless

- also only applied recent security patches and also tried uninstalling them

Since now tried every standart troubleshooting method, as:

- sfc & dism

- malware & AV scan

- uninstalling printers

- deactivating addins

- downgrading office suite to previous version

- office fast & online repair

- complete removal of office by "fix it" tool

- creating new user

- chksdk and so on...

problem persists... nothing helps...

programs starting every third launch id say but sometimes i have to try it more than 10 times to make them work...

All errors rely on:

ntdll.dll
AppVIsvSubsystems64.dll

made some debugdiag trace but cant upload it here :/

Edit: also tried disabling Avast, same Version as @Scott, but added whole "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15" to exclusion list in files module. Seems to help make things a bit more stable.

Avast seems to be the culprit here as well.  It just so happens the Windows updates coincided with Avast program update.  Apparently for us even after disabling Avast the problem still persisted and Avast was overlooked. I setup a new workstation and only installed all latest Windows updates and Office 365 latest version and it worked perfectly.  The second Avast installed the Office applications started crashing and only with complete uninstallation of Avast did Office start working fine again.

Other users with Avast are experiencing the same problem as well on their forums: https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=175144.0

You're welcome. I know the feeling as I wasted an entire day of my weekend to narrow it down to Avast.  I can confirm Office doesn't crash 100% of the time, 1/10 times it will actually load and work.
