Microsoft Office Upload Center - file failed to upload

I added a file to my local copy of SkyDrive Pro, which had some illegal characters in the file name.  The Upload Center told me that the upload failed due to "Invalid Characters".

I renamed the file, and the renamed file uploaded with no problems, but Upload Center still has the failed upload listed, and pops up a message fairly regularly telling me the upload failed.

When I click on Resolve --> Discard Changes, I get the message "The action can't be completed because the file is open. Close the file and try again".

The file is not open... it has been renamed.  Rebooting the computer does not resolve the error.  How can I remove this entry from the Upload Center?

I also have the same problem, although in my case I haven't done a file rename. I have deleted that file from skydrive. It isn't open anywhere. I've done the cache dump and a reset and it's still there. I don't want to disable the notification in case I miss something important in the future.

I too have this problem, no way to remove it and it keeps toasting me. Somehow I have managed to get into a situation where it is trying to upload/sync a shortcut to the file rather than the actual file. If anyone has any idea's that would be good :)

Okay, so I realise that this will be totally unsupported but couldn't find another way. I located the folder C:\Users\FOO\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\OfficeFileCache and in there I found an access database called CentralTable.accdb. In there is a table called MasterFile and I located my record for my shortcut file and deleted it. I cannot recommend this course of action but it did resolve my issue.

Thanks Danny,

Worked for me!

I ran into this same issue. I had deleted the files that failed to upload, but the error was popping up on muliple computers even though I had purged the files from all PCs and SkyDrive. Editing the OfficeFileCache database fixed the problem right away. Thanks for the guidance!

This also worked for me - I found it a bit easier to search for "centraltable.accdb" as it's hidden by default, and likewise in the access database to search for my file name but not as a whole string as it takes forever to crawl through all possible records.  Also, I had to kill Office Central in Task Manager to open the db, but once the db was open Office Central re-opened itself with no pro

Thanks. In my case I foolishly tried to put an Outlook archive pst in skydrivepro. It hit the max size then choked but I was unable to get it to stop trying to sync the file. Couldn't "save a copy", couldn't "discard changes".

These steps fixed the problem for me:

  1. Stop syncing skydrive pro library (right click the notification icon->Stop syncing a folder)
  2. Clear the Office Upload Center cache. Also accessible through notification icon.
  3. Resume syncing with skydrive pro.

This was the only thing that worked for me, thanks for posting this!

I'm building out documentation for SkyDrive Pro for my organization, and I somehow need to document common troubleshooting issues.  This was one that happened to me, so I must assume that it's possible it will happen to someone else in my organization, need to run this past my IT group since it's pretty technical.  Anyone else find a solution that doesn't involve editing tables in Access?

I ran into this problem as well. but I figured that this was a Cache location so it had no permanant purpose so what I did was deleted the contents of the OfficeFileCache folder (after stopping both the skydrive process and the Upload center process).

After Deleting these files and restarting skydrive pro the Cache database was rebuilt and it catologed the current contents of the monitored folder.

I hope this helps.

What is this piece of shit and why do I want it?  I cant even do a directory search without getting pop up messages about it needing repaired.  I press "repair" and nothing except more of the same.  Damn Microsoft.  I uploaded files just fine in earlier Windows.  I am going to see if I can delete it entirely.  It does work and I don't want it>>>>

Thank you for your post Danny.  In trying to follow your steps to resolve my "Upload Center", I am having trouble with the last step...how to I locate the "record for my shortcut file" in order to delete it?  I have absolutely no experience with coding, etc. and am totally lost once I open the MasterFile table.  Thanks in advance for your assistance!

My customer hit the 20,000 file/folder limit AND the 255 character limit for total path and filename.

I used the solution regarding removing the sync and then restarting it, but also had to shorten the folder names.  At first I thought it wasn't the 255 limit, but instead of C:\users\... when calculating the path length, you have to use https://acme.my-sharepoint.com.... etc.

Our Upload Center was filled with problems... this combination of issues was what did it for us.

Office Upload Center is driving me crazy. It simply DOESN"T WORK !!!

I've decided to send some folders to Skydrive and hundreds and hundreds of files are pending.

Every single time I decide to move a folder to Skydrive, the same thing happens.

and the Upload Center Interface/application is ridiculous:

1st: it doesn't say why files are stuck

2nd: none of the available actions work. Here we go:

Open the File to solve ?  Nothing happens, the upper left Save icon on Word keeps trying to load forever

Save a Copy ?  Why should I save a copy. This is the first time I load the files to Skydrive. Files that I've not opened for a long time.

Save As ? doesn't solve the problem either

Sign in to Solve ?  same again ! it doesn't solve anything !

Open on the web ?  what for ? It doesn't solve anything

Discard changes ?? What changes ?? this is the first time all the files are loaded !! There are no changes !

Well, DISCARD at least remove the file from the list BUT, there is NO SELECT ALL to apply a same action, so I have to spend hours and hours selecting each file to discard it !!!!

I ask again: When will Office Upload Center actually work ?

I'm so tired of spending hours to solve problems that actually doesn't exist, but the Upload Center insist on saying it does.

After looking at it for sometime I double clicked on the docs that were in the error notification window.   They opened up and I Saved As in each doc.  The Save As window opened up in the OneDrive area and I could see the doc with a red x. I clicked ok it warned me about the overwrite and I said Ok.

All my errors went away.
