Microsoft Exchange 2010 upgrade and Active Directory Sites and Services Issues
We recently upgraded to Exchange 2010 from Exchange 2003. During the integration process the technician asked me why we hadn't setup Active Directory Sites and Services. My answer at the time was that I truly didn't understand the need or benefits. After he explained the benefits (20 remote sites), we started setting up the different sites. Within 20 minutes of setting up all the sites, mail flow started failing and connection between Outlook and Exchange could not be established. We just removed what we had implemented (sites) and things started working correctly. Here's a breakdown of our topology; it's a hub and spoke network with 100mb links between locations (K-12). Our network comes into our central office and then branches out to our remote sites. Each remote site has it's own DC that is used for file sharing. Each DC is also a DNS server and a GC. The ability to keep our clients contained at "their" location for logon, seems to be a benefit that would greatly help decrease traffic and virus vulnerabilities. Why did mail flow and the ability to logon through outlook stop? Could it be that we didn't give the Microsoft Exchange Active Directory Topology service enough time to update? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
