Microsoft Excel Extremely Slow to Open Files

I am experiencing extremely slow opening of files for only excel on my computer.

Conditions and environment:

  • Files are stored locally on SSD
  • Only one user on computer
  • i7 CPU 32gb ram 512gb SSD
  • No active antivirus scanning that I know of, unless windows has built in scanning that is on by default?

Details about situation:

  • If I open excel program by itself, and then open file from program it is fast.
  • If I open excel file directly, even a blank newly made file, then it is slow.
  • I tried starting in safe mode, but when I open excel file in safe mode I run into an error.

What other info can I screenshot or display that would be helpful in solving this?

Thanks!!

Hi MattMG,

Which version of Office and Window system are you using now?

If you just upgraded to Windows 10 and got this issue, this problem might be caused by Cortana Voice.

Please try this method:

  1. Disable Cortana Voice
    Cortana/Settings/
    "Hey Cortana" switch to off
  2. Stop Cortana Service
    Open Task Manager
    Find and Right-Click Cortana Service
    End Task

If this issue didn't appear in Windows 10, you can refer to this similar case about your issue:

You can refer to the answer of Certia and try to modify registry, then check if it works for you.

PLEASE NOTE:
Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

Please refer to this article about how to back up and restore the registry in Windows:

Hope it's helpful.
