I have just purchased the communicator client. I was told that this product can sync with MS Exchange only, and that it DID NOT require the MS Communication Server. Can this client be configured through MS Exchange only, or does it require the Communication server? If it does not require the communication server, does anyone have configuration steps? Thanks!

I am afraid not. The MOC client is directly tied to the OCS server, and has some proprietary checks that would preclude its use with any other server. There are some misleading texts on how MOC 2007 R2 can be standalone, but what they are referring to is licensing, not use. If you are just looking to try this, I would recommend using the free VHD files that Microsoft has for download. The only drawback is that you will need to have Hyper-V installed on one of your servers, since the days of virtual server images has long since passed.
