I have had countless issues with my excel files working fine and then at some random reason excel crashes whenever I try to save or mostly even just open the file. The reason always seems to be connected to references. I used to have ticked:

"Visual Basic for Applications"
"Microsoft Excel 15.0 Object Library"
"Microsoft Office 15.0 Object Library"
"OLE Automation"

After having a lot of files randomly starting to crash on open, I found out that unticking 

"Microsoft Office 15.0 Object Library"
"OLE Automation"

in the VBA references usually fixed that issue.

However, now I am coming across problems where I cannot save a file and have to activate "Microsoft Office 15.0 Object Library" again. This is quite confusing and frustrating.

Does anybody understand what is going on and is there a fix for this? My workbooks are mostly heavily using PowerQuery with some Power Pivot and VBA-code.

Based on your description, your excel file random crashed. Then you found go to VBA- tools- References, if you unchecked "Microsoft Office 15.0 Object Library" and "OLE Automation" your excel works fine. But you got a new issue if you unchecked "Microsoft Office 15.0 Object Library", you can't save the file.

This issue is strange, did you get any error messages before your excel file crash? Could you tell me if your issue appeared in all Excel file or a particular file?

First I suggest you when the issue appeared, open Event Viewer to check whether there's any error about the Excel crash issue. Then you can ocollect the event log and provide us with the whole error messages of event log. I can get more information about your issue from this message.

Then you can try to repair you Office application in Control Panel and check if it works fine now.
