Messages stuck in local delivery queue on Exchange 2003 - recipient is journal mailbox
We have 2 Exchange 2003 mailbox servers that recently started to exhibit strange behavior as of 7/13/2010. We have envelope journaling setup and it has been working for some time without problem. Recently we started having messages get stuck in the local delivery queue which are addressed to various journal mailboxes in different stores. The only commonality between these messages is that they're all UPS delivery confirmation emails that include French and English in the body of the email. The messages sit in the queue until the timeout period expires or I purge them. The journal mailboxes are working fine otherwise, and thousands of messages per day are being archived properly, it only seems to be several of these UPS messages that get stuck.

Its looking content conversion issue for mail coming for UPS message. Can you check whther these emails are coming from Lotus Notes. You can see this by see message header (Any old mail). you can fix this kind of issue by create remote domain but unfortunatly you are using Excange 2003. What about if you receiev this message in normal mailbox ??. The history of content conversion in Exchange :: http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/02/18/75624.aspxAnil

Hi, What's the error message followed in the queue? Please try to improve the Diagnostic Logging on the MSExchangeTransport, then try to check the Event Log. Thanks Allen

The message is delivered to the normal mailbox for the user it was addressed to without any problem. It only seems to be a problem with the journal mailboxes. I'm looking at the header information and I see nothing that mentions the mail server version of the sending server. Maybe I'm just not seeing it... Here is a copy of the (sanitized) header. I see no error in the queue. I will see about turning up the logging level and will report back the results.
July 19th, 2010 8:40pm

I cranked up the logging level to 0x7 (Field Engineering Level) as per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997825%28EXCHG.65%29.aspx. When I try to force the messages through I get a warning - Event ID 327 from MSExchangeTransport, with description "The following call : EcCopyTo to the store failed. Error code : -2147221221 (Message will be NDR'd). MDB : 8fc2ad07-7bc6-4c55-b500-bd7ab54caf59. FID : . MID : . File : E:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\Mailroot\vsi 1\Queue\NTFS_bf8b835d01cb27600009fa73.EML."There are no other errors or warnings. All of the other events are just informational.

Hi, Error code -2147221221 is equivalent to the MAPI_E_CORRUPT_DATA error. Now please try to contact PSS to get the hotfix to fix this issue: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920845 Thanks Allen
