Messages in Public Folders change from read to unread
Hi all... We are a small office running 1 server with Windows Server 2008 OS and Exchange Server 2007. We have multiple people working on projects so we use public folders to store our emails so everyone has access to what has been sent & received. The default permission on these folders is "Author", and all clients are MS Office 2003. The problem we are having is that messages which have been marked as read, are somehow changing to un-read (ie. bold). This can happen right before our eyes at times. I'm not sure if Outlook/Exchange is getting confused from one user to the next, or there is a bug, or a setting somewhere that needs to be changed. Any suggestions to stop this happening would be greatly appreciated...

When you look at the properties of that folder, is the "Maintain per-user read and unread . . ." box checked? --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Rich, I read somewhere else about this setting however I haven't been able to find this checkbox. I've tried right clicking (in Outlook) on "Public Folders", "All Public Folders" and individual folders which we have created but it doesn't seem to be there..? Can you please tell me where to find it and I will let you know what it is set to..?

Hi, This is a known issue in the prevision version of outlook 2003 SP2. It may occur when you run Outlook 2003 in Cached Exchange Mode. I recommend you apply the following hotfix and see if the issue persists. E-mail messages that you read in a public folder remain marked as unread in Outlook 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838896

It's a setting managed by the Exchange admin from the Exchange Management Console. >Can you please tell me where to find it and I will let you know what it is set to..? It's on the property page of the public folder. --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP --- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

Yes, try to apply the hotfix and see the result. E-mail messages that you read in a public folder remain marked as unread in Outlook 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838896

Yes, try to apply the hotfix and see the result. E-mail messages that you read in a public folder remain marked as unread in Outlook 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838896 I have already installed Office 2003 Service Pack 3, so this hotfix has already been applied... ...but this is not exactly the issue we are experiencing anyway. The problem is that emails which have previously been read, and marked as read, are then, at a later stage, showing up as unread...
