Message exceeded maximum hop count?

A user is having troubles receiving email. However that email is from a specific address, he has no problems receiving email from any other address, just one. Here is the message that gets bounced back to the sender (who is outside the the organization that I work for): Sent: Monday, October 05, 2009 3:37 PM To: Sender <outside email address> Subject: Delivery Final Failure Notice Can not deliver the message you sent. Will not retry. The following addresses had delivery problems <mydomain email address> Message exceeded maximum hop count. The fact that this only happens from one specific address leads me to believe that it no a problem with my domain, but a problem with the sender. Is this right, or is it in fact a problem with my domain? If it is a problem with my domain how can I fix it? Thanks.

Increase the maximum "hop count" (either on the SMTP Virtual Server(Exchange 2003), or the Receive Connector (Exchange 2007)). Somesystems send email through a ton of internal machines before it everhits the Internet.Of course it could also be that there's a message loop that's causingthe problem. Get hold of the other system's admin and see if they canget a copy of the message's headers. If there's a message loop thesame set of machines will be present over and over in the "Receved:"headers.---Rich MatheisenMCSE+I, Exchange MVP--- Rich Matheisen MCSE+I, Exchange MVP

if the domain that you are sending the mail to has an incorrect MX record configured, this can cause the problem. Set the Maximum hop count value to 30. Open Exchange System Manager. Expand Servers , then expand an Exchange server, then expand Protocols , then expand SMTP . Right-click an SMTP virtual server (for example, Default SMTP Virtual Server) and select Properties . Select the Delivery tab, and then click Advanced . Enter the desired value in the Maximum hop count field and click OK to save the change. Click OK to close the Properties dialog box of the SMTP virtual server. Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

Would It be the mx record on my server? The user on my server can receive all other emails with no problems, but it is just getting email from this one specific address.

No necessarily. Make sure you have set the above hopecount in your exchange server. also you can check the status of remote domain via below site to see any issue with their domain http://www.checkdns.net/quickcheckdomainf.aspx Vinod |CCNA|MCSE 2003 +Messaging|MCTS|ITIL V3|

here are some of the results form the checkdns.net checks: Domain mydomain.com has no MX records, but it has A record for domain. This configuration is not recommended Domain mydomain.com has only one mail-server Checking mail server (A record for domain) 70.xx.xx.xx [70..xx.xx.xx] Mail server 70.xx.xx.xx[70.xx.xx.xx] answers on port 25 <<< 220 mydomain.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 6.0.3790.211 ready at Tue, 6 Oct 2009 08:48:01 -0600 >>> HELO www.checkdns.net <<< 250 mydomain.com Hello [195.60.98.253] >>> MAIL FROM: <dnscheck> <<< 250 2.1.0 dnscheck....Sender OK >>> RCPT TO: <postmaster(mydomain)> <<< 250 2.1.5 postmaster(mydomain) >>> QUIT Mail server 70.xx.xx.xx [70..xx.xx.xx] accepts mail for mydomain.com All MX are configured properly This is a bit confusing. The first line says that my domain has no mx records, but the last line says all mx are configured properly. so is my mx the issue?

This is interesting, here are some of the results form the checkdns.net checks for the sender's server: Zone version on ns1.senderserver.ca is 10032, but on ns1.senderserver.com it is 10049 Check that your secondaries are set up to load zone from primary. and Domain senderserver.ca has only one mail-server Checking mail server (PRI=10) mail.senderserver.ca [204.xx.xx.xx] Mail server mail.senderserver.ca[204.xx.xx.xx] answers on port 25 <<< 220 ms179trend01.senderserver.ca [ESMTP Server] service ready;Trend Micro ready; 10/06/09 15:57:54 >>> HELO www.checkdns.net <<< 250 ms179trend01.sysco.ca >>> MAIL FROM: <dnscheck> <<< 250 <dnscheck> Sender OK >>> RCPT TO: <senderserver> <<< 550 domain of forward path is not allowed - >>> RCPT TO: <senderserver> <<< 550 domain of forward path is not allowed - >>> RCPT TO: <senderserver> <<< 550 domain of forward path is not allowed - >>> RCPT TO: <senderserver> <<< 550 domain of forward path is not allowed - Probably mail server does not accept mail for senderserver.ca (received status 550) Some of your MX do not work properly So Does this mean that there is a problem on the sender's end?

Hi Jason, First, please check the maximum hop count of your server, the default value is 30. You also can increase the value to see if it works. Second, it can be a remote side issue, please contact their admin and check how they reroute the mail, whether the mail pass by lots of servers in their side before delivering to your server. Thanks, Elvis
