Message dissapeared from outlook?
I have an SBS 2003 server tht works well but something strange happened yesterday. I recieved an email, a response from microsoft live to a query on behalf of a customer, I read it in outlook and decided that it needed passing on to the customer but as there email was down, hence me doing the work, I decided it needed to be faxed over the next day (today) when they had reopened. Logged on today and the message is no longer in my inbox? I checked the server tracking database and yes I did not imagine it, delivered to my mailbox at 1506 on the 5th OK, must have deleted/moved it by accident, created custom search folder to look for it but unable to locate in any way. Check deleted mail, nothing, check recovery of deleted mail from exchange server, nothing. SO my question is where the ____ has it gone and how can I either get it back or find out what happened to it. Any help most appreciated.

You could have hard-deleted the message by accident. By default SBS 2003 / SBS 2003 R2 has the Deleted Item Retention set to 30 days (SBS 2008 as well ...).How can I recover items that I have "hard deleted" in Outlook?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/246153 If you want to or have to do it manuallyRecovering a hard deleted email in Exchange 2003http://blogs.msexchange.org/dalby/2006/10/16/recovering-a-hard-deleted-email-in-exchange-2003/ And Petri is always good:Using Outlook 2003 to Recover Deleted Itemshttp://www.petri.co.il/using_outlook_2003_to_recover_deleted_items.htm If all this fails and you have a backup from after you received the message and before it disappeared, you could restore to an RSG:The method below can also be used to merge the missing item into your mailboxBlog of the EMEA SBS TEAMHow to use the Recovery Storage Group to restore a Single Mailbox.http://blogs.technet.com/asksbs/archive/2008/06/03/how-to-use-the-recovery-storage-group-to-restore-a-single-mailbox.aspxMCTS: Messaging | MCSE: S+M | Small Business Specialist

I know that sometimes you need to do a recovery of a hard deleted item from the folder it was hard deleted from.Meaning that hard deleted items don't go to deleted items folder, they are just deleted.I am sure you have tried performing a recover deleted items while you are in your inbox?

Maljazar: I don't think I can use RSG either as its SBS server. :( Sure you can. Both with SBS 2003 and SBS 2008. Above I posted a link to the EMEA SBS Team on how to do this with SBS 2003:How to use the Recovery Storage Group to restore a Single Mailbox.http://blogs.technet.com/asksbs/archive/2008/06/03/how-to-use-the-recovery-storage-group-to-restore-a-single-mailbox.aspxHow to use a Recovery Storage Group in SBS 2008 http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2009/01/26/how-to-use-a-recovery-storage-group-in-sbs-2008.aspxMCTS: Messaging | MCSE: S+M | Small Business Specialist
