MessageTrackingLog lifetime and retention period
Hi All I've got a question that need some more clarification regarding Exchange Server 2007 Message tracking log. Each week (Sunday) i do Full backup using Symantec Backup Exec System Recovery 8.5.3 and Incremental backup every other day. when I execute the following script to get the Distribution usage statistic, does this means i get the last week worth of data instead of whatever i put into the -Start parameter ? #---------------------------------- #Count for each group of messages #---------------------------------- # Get-MessageTrackingLog -Start 1/1/2009 -EventId Expand | group-object RelatedRecipientAddress | Sort-Object Count | ft Name,Count -Autosize # I believe that by using Full backup the transaction log gets flushed. Can Anyone please shed some light in this matter. Thanks/* Windows Infrastructure Support Engineer */

Answer is yes as well as no. First of all check the settings of Message Tracking logs with below cmdlet and make sure that your actual message tracking log data (available atMessageTrackingLogPath location)size is not exceeding the limit set inMessageTrackingLogMaxDirectorySize &MessageTrackingLogMaxFileSizeparameters toaccommodate7 days tracking logs. In that case, you can increase the size in these parameters... Get-TransportServer HTServerName | FL *Tracking* Get-MailboxServer HTServerName | FL *Tracking* If it doesn't exceed, then make sure thatMessageTrackingLogMaxAge parameter is set to 7.00:00:00 (7 days). About Transaction Logs, these are different than Message Tracking Logs. Transaction logs are being flushed after full or incremental backup but not Message Tracking logs. Tracking logs are controlled by System Attendant service during onlinemaintenanceschedule and it verifies the settings set in above cmdlet and delete tracking logs accordingly so if you are all set to keep 7 days message tracking data then cmdlet you mentioned gives correct result. Hi Amit, Yes my Messagetracking Log retention period is 30 days, therefore i can say that was the number of the statistic per month.: MessageTrackingLogEnabled : True MessageTrackingLogMaxAge : 30.00:00:00 MessageTrackingLogMaxDirectorySize : 250MB MessageTrackingLogMaxFileSize : 10MB MessageTrackingLogPath : L:\EXCHANGE\TransportRoles\Logs\MessageTracking MessageTrackingLogSubjectLoggingEnabled : True MessageTrackingLogEnabled : True MessageTrackingLogMaxAge : 30.00:00:00 MessageTrackingLogMaxDirectorySize : 250MB MessageTrackingLogMaxFileSize : 10MB MessageTrackingLogPath : L:\EXCHANGE\TransportRoles\Logs\MessageTracking MessageTrackingLogSubjectLoggingEnabled : True so, can i say that, Message tracking log is kept in Mailbox Server while the transport log is kept in Hub Transport Server ? thanks/* Windows Infrastructure Support Engineer */

Message tracking records the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) transport activity of all messages that are transferred to and from an Exchange 2007 computer that has the Hub Transport, Mailbox, or Edge Transport server role installed So, Hub transport server also has its message tracking log to record to mails through it Yes, the transport log is kept in Hub transport server

Yes, as James told.. All mails pass through Hub Transport server role in Exchange 2007 environment even though it is sent from a user to another user on same Mailbox Server, so Hub Transport server has correct Message tracking logs and transport logs. What's the current size of Message Tracking log Directory andindividualFiles? If those are near to 250MB and 10MB respectively, suggest you to increase the size of these settings with Set-MailboxServer and Set-TransportServer cmdlets...Amit Tank | MVP Exchange Server | MCITP: EMA | MCSA: M | http://ExchangeShare.WordPress.com

Hi All, it is still on 67.3 MB so it's plenty though, the L Drive partition size is about 12 GB thanks to all for the suggestion, your answer and response is really helpful for me. Cheers./* Windows Infrastructure Support Engineer */
