Mapping of IP Phone field in AD to IP Phone Ext. field in Exchange Details Template
Team,I am running everywhere to find the solution for this problem which i am facing for a long time now.Environment: Exchange 2003 Sp2Many of our users are having this issue, InOutlook Address Book (GAL)under Phone/Notes Tab they see IP Phone Extension drop down is grayed out, i checked with my team here and I came to know that the Schema has already been upgraded and that field is enabled in schema but the question is then why the phone number which we insert in Active Directory didnt reflect in GAL, is that means that the Mapping between the IP Phone attributein AD is not mapped with the IP Phone Extension in Exchange.Someone told me that these settings needs to be done on the Exchange Details Template but i need some info on how i can map an Ip Phone attribute from AD to the IP Phone Extension attribute in Default Details Templates.i know i may have missed some important information in the details which i mentioned, in case you need any other information please let me know and i will provide you the info. Please advice.ThanksInderjit

you can edit the deatils Templates.not the best article.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb123970(EXCHG.65).aspxHere is the desciption of Exchange 2007 template editor that might get you in the right directionhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124494.aspxor you can change the application to set both attributes on user objects in AD.lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

The Details Template is one of the coolest and least used features of Exchange Server. However, it does have some short comings. the fields that you can add to the "User" details template is fairly limited. I am pretty sure that IP Phone is *not* one of the fields available. If you follow Lasse's recommendations, you will find information on who to edit the get to the details template editor. The E2K3 editor is very different than the E2K7 editor. Microsoft made a lot of improvements in the E2K7 version. I recommend you store the IP Phone number in one of the Custom Attributes. You can add any of the 15 custom attributes to the details template. There are ways to "hack" the Active Directory and add other attributes to the list of available attributes on the template interface; they are not only frowned upon by Microsoft but the results you may get are inconsistent (it seems to work about 75% of the time). Not really worth putting your forest in to an unsupported configuration.Jim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com

As Jim already pointed out I would also not go with modifying anything in forest that may put it in an unsupported sitatuation. As far as all your requirement is concerned, I think the default template itself offers a lot than an extraordinary need. If you want to try it in your labs you can probably try granting your Authenticated Users group to Read IP Phone Number and Read IP Phone Number (Others) on a specific user object and see if others can see the GAL updated or may be have that grayed out drop down enabled. To be honest, I have never tried that myself so I would strongly recommend you trying it in your labs first. MMilind Naphade | MCTS:M | http://www.msexchangegeek.com

Similar case for your reference, though it is for Exchange 2007, I think we also can try to add Exchangecustomeattribute for Phone-IP-PrimaryDisplay IP phone field in Exchange 2007 GAL?http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/exchangesvrgeneral/thread/d3f6edf7-ee28-4aab-9c6f-6b096695068e/Regards,Xiu

Team,Thanks for the reply. Here is the twist in the story...The Schema has already been upgraded as per the steps which Xiu has stated in the thread, what i noticed is some of the users can see that drop down and get the information about the user's VOIP number but for others the IP Phone Ext drop down is grayed out...My question to all of the champs is "Detail Templates - User in ESM, does that applies to every user in the organization or we can restrict that template to get applied for few users why i am able to see drop down with the number for few and why it is disabled for other..Please solve my Mystery. Thanks a ton.Inderjit

How safeto click on REBUILD for my Global Address list in ESM after i make changes to my address book?Inderjit

depends on how many recipients you have. With a couple of thousands recipients, GAL is usually rebuild in a minute or two.lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

Thanks Lasse but is it something we usually do on our exchange server very often, is there is something i should keep in my mind while doing the REBUILD of the GAL on the server? Inderjit

by GAL I assume you mean Offline Address Book.OAB is default scheduled to rebuild once every 24 hours. so pushing it manually once moer time is not going to hurt you unless you have a lot of recipients.lasse at humandata dot se, http://anewmessagehasarrived.blogspot.com

Hi,If we select user, then I think the Template settings should be applied to all the users. Besides, please try to check security of the user security properties when you modify the templates. Authenticated Users should have "Read", "Execute", "Read Permissions".For "click on REBUILD for my Global Address list in ESM", I'd like to know how did you rebuild, please try to give the steps here.(Just create an offline address list with a filtered copy of the global address list? )More information to share with you: How to manually recreate the All Global Address Lists container1) Right click on the newly created All Global Address Lists object, then choose New > Object2) Choose the class addressBookContainer from the scroll list, then choose Next3) For the attribute cn enter "Default Global Address List", then choose Next4) For the attribute displayName enter "Default Global Address List", then choose Next5) Click the button "More Attributes"6) Scroll down the attribute list to showInAdvancedViewOnly and set the value to TRUE (all caps)7) Scroll up and find the attribute purportedSearch and set the following value:(& (mailnickname=*) (| (&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user)(!(homeMDB=*))(!(msExchHomeServerName=*)))(&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=user)(|(homeMDB=*)(msExchHomeServerName=*)))(&(objectCategory=person)(objectClass=contact))(objectCategory=group)(objectCategory=publicFolder) ))8) Click OK then click Finish to create the object. After both of these containers are created, force Active Directory replication using the Active Directory Sites and Services MMC. Once the domain controllers have been replicated, open the Exchange System Manager. Drill down to Recipients\All Global Address Lists\Default Global Address List, then open its properties. Test the functionality of the GAL by clicking on the Preview button under the General tab. If you see the contents of the GAL, you have successfully rebuilt these containers. As a final step, rebuild the Recipient Update Service(s). This will allow for full population of the showInAddressBook attribute on all recipients. Regards, Xiu

Hi, Inderjit: I am attempting to do this same thing in an Exchange 2003 Sp2 Environment. How were you able to get the Phone-IP-Primary field to show up in ADSIEdit? I have added it to the Schema under MsExchCustomAttributes, but it doesn't show up under the 'CN=Exchnage' under Services-->Microsoft Exchange-->MyCompany-->Addressing-->Display-Templates-->409. Am I missing a step? Thanks in advance, Bizzum
