Managing Groups using Outlook 2003 Client
Managing Groups using Outlook 2003 Client (via RDP over https) Hi, I have a user that would like the ability to managed the members of certain groups (ie: add/delete users from groups/distrubution lists). Does anyone know how this can be achived? I am thinking the solution lies with the advanced permissions in Active Directory for this user. Currently the user is a plain jane Domain User. Any ideas? To manage a group via the Outlook client the group must be either a pure Distribution Group or a mail-enabled Security Group. You can delegate management of the group membership in a few different ways. One option is to assign your user the manager of the group using the "Managed By" tab in Active Directory Users and Computers. Then select the "Manager can update membership list" option. The other option is to directly modify the group's ACL using the Securtiy->Advancedtab in Active Directory Users and Computers. Assign your user the ability to read and write the member attribute/property of the relevant Group objects. Managing the membership via Outlook is not ideal because of the need for the all the groups to be mail-enabled. It would be better to provide a web portal for doing this (or buy one off the shelf from a company such as Quest). Tony www.activedir.org

Thanks. That resolved the issue. Sorry for the late response. I was out of town. Andre

I'm facing the same issue except that my user needs to be able to create new distribution lists also. The problem I'm running into so far is that I can't seem to find the right way to restrict her permissions for that OU to just being able to create and manage a mail distribution group. I'm also having a problem where the groups that she does create don't appear to be mail enabled. I think I probably need to install the Exchange System Management Tools in addition to the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack.Any help is much appreciated!Bob
