Managed Folder Policies and Exchange 2010
Hi We are running Exchange 2010 SP1. There is a mailbox named Marketing that has a large number of mails (about 3GB). To reduce the size, they have given us permission to apply a Managed Folder Policy to it. The Policy will permanently delete messages older than 6 months, and thus clear about 2GB data. In E2007, we used to run the Managed Folder Assistant between 10.00 PM - 06.00 AM to avoid affecting the performance of the mailboxes, however I understand that in E2010 the Assistant runs all the time but is throttled. I'm going to apply the Policy to the Marketing mailbox over the weekend, however had some questions: i. If a Managed Folder Policy needs to delete a lot of mail, can this affect the performance of the mailbox ii. How can we ensure that all mails are deleted over the weekend and there is no impact on Monday (the mailbox is less used on the weekend) iii. If we find that there is an impact, is it possible to stop the Managed Folder Asssistanr running on that mailbox only iv. If we stop the the Assistant using Stop-ManagedFolderAssistant, I understand this is per server. How can we we then isolate Marketing from this process and allow the Assistant to start again for other mailboxes?

i. Of course it can, but it probably has more of an effect on the entire server, not just the mailbox. A mailbox is just a query in the database (mailbox store); mailboxes are not discrete elements that are affected performance-wise independently. ii., iii. and iv. Moot based on my answer to i. I'm going to apply the Policy to the Marketing mailbox over the weekend Hi Neil, After you apply the Policy to the mailbox, you can use the Start-ManagedFolderAssistant cmdlet to immediately start processing the specified mailbox. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998864.aspxFrank Wang TechNet Community Support
