I have set up a managed folder mailbox policy to permanently delete items in the deleted items folder older than 90 days. My problem is that when I base the "Retention period starts" on "When item is moved to the folder", it never deletes anything. When I base the policy on "When delivered, end date for calendar and recurring tasks" it works. Not sure how to fix/troubleshoot this.

This may have to do with how Exchange considers something being "moved" to the Deleted Items folder. If you just click "Delete" on a message, that may not actually set the "moved to" date on the item. I'm not sure about this, but it seems to be a logical hunch. IMHO, the fix is merely to set the retention period to start "When delivered, end date for calendar..."You could dig around using MDBVU32 on the message properties and see if that reveals anything. I just spent 10 minutes looking at a message in my deleted items folder trying to figure out how that was marked, but MDBVU32 is a bit cryptic for us mere mortals.Jim McBee - Blog - http://mostlyexchange.blogspot.com

That's funny, I used MFCMAPIto look at the message details. Looks like basically the same tool (check it out if you haven't seen it, I like it much more!). There were only 4 date/time fields (submission, creation, modification and delivery) none of which seem to have anything to do with when it was moved unless it changes modification date/time.

I meant to add that I don't want to use the "When delivered" date if I can avoid it. If you delete a message greater than your retention period, it will be purged that night. Doesn't seem logical.

Hi, Please understand that when choosing “When item is moved to the folder” option, the MAPI property ElcMoveDate (0x67170102) is calculated to check whether the message has been expired. ElcMoveDate is set when the managed folder assistant runs against the folder. This is basically the date and time from when the retention period will start. Once this is set your retention period is one day, 24 hours later this item will be deleted (if that is what you have set in your managed content settings) after the managedfolderassistant runs again. It doesn’t matter if that item had been in the deleted items folder for 3 months, until it has the ElcMoveDate stamped on it, it won’t start counting against the retention period. Once the retention period is passed, the managedfolderassistant will need to run again to take the desired action on the item. Using MFCMAPI, I do not see a message property named "ElcMoveDate". The only date properties I see are PR_CLIENT_SUBMIT_TIME (PidTagClientSubmitTime), PR_CREATION_TIME (PidTagCreationTime), PR_LAST_MODIFICATION_TIME (PidTagLastModification_Time, ptagLastModificationTime) and PR_MESSAGE_DELIVERY_TIME (PidTagMessageDeliveryTime).

Hi, Please check whether the MAPI tag 0x67170102 can be found on the message item through MFCMapi tool after the managedfolderassistant runs. I would like to explain it is normail that the ElcMoveDate is not a date property. Here is the example of ElcMoveDate value: 08000000E04CB8892D68CA88 Microsoft has an internal tool to translate the value to a date. Thanks, Mike
