Making the GAL available to BESE?
Hi, Running Exchange 2007 on a 2008 Standard server. We recently installed Blackberry Enterprise Server Express on a separate server and it is working for the most part. I found out that we are supposed to be able to access the GAL from our Blackberries but I haven't figured out how. Called Blackberry tech support and they suggested that I have to enable access to the Blackberry Enterprise Server(BES) from the Exchange side and that they don't do Exchange. So does anyone have an idea what they are referring to? How can I make the GAL available to the BES? I'm not an Exchange or a BES expert so step-by-step instructions would be helpful. Thanks in advance, Linn

You don't display the GAL, it is done via a lookup. So when you are creating a message, you can choose to look someone up. It doesn't display the full list (Remember this is an Enterprise solution so could be deployed by anyone from 5-50000 users). You don't have to enable any functionality at all, it just does it as part of the access to the mailboxes and Exchange that Blackberry can do - like Outlook. Thanks for the reply Simon. I understand what you are saying and gave that a try but it only seems to work some of the time. For example I was able to look myself up but I didn't get any results trying to find one of my colleagues. We are both listed in the GAL. I don't know, maybe it was due to being inside a building. I know I have connection issues in here. Thanks, Linn

It makes a live lookup, so if you are in a poor coverage area then you will have problems getting the results. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP. http://blog.sembee.co.uk , http://exbpa.com/

Yes, as simon pointed out, if the signal is bad you will have issues with lookup. What is your BES version? Just few points: There are two modes of GAL lookup with BES. MAPI-based lookup and LDAP-query-based lookup. MAPI based is the default lookup method used. Search for KB11939 in the BES support site: http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/microsites/searchEntry.do
