Mailbox sizes
HiWhat is the recommended size limit of any one mailbox within ESM? The maximum you can set is (within ESM anyway) around 2GB. Is this because microsoft does not recommend mailboxes over 2GB? I read somewhere that it is no. of messages rather than size that counts, however this is not useful information as ESM only specifies a size limit. Can anyone come up with a recommended limit, does the Jet engine battle after about 2GB or can you have (potentially) 75GB mailboxes for a single user without any problems?Pete

there is no recommended size limitfor mailbox, it's depend of your HARDWARE, if you able tosupport 20GB mailboxyou can do it. and this link will help you to Calculate Your Server Size http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb124226.aspx

You can set it through ADSI. We have several VP level users with 6 GB mailboxes. As long as they keep items per folder under 3000, everything works fine. If you get over 5000 per folder, it is slow. BTW, I don't agree with large mailboxes, I would love to set the limit MUCH lower and make everyone archive. But because of compliance issues, the company doesn't want PSTs that can go away with a BSOD out on a client. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930366

I am pretty sure they addressed fixing the interface so that you can set the mailbox size limit to something larger than 2GB in the E2K7 interface. It is a pain to do in E2K/E2K3, but at least it can be done. 2GB is a LOT of mail for one person, though, like John I see VIP users with 6 or 8GB of e-mail. This is a tough balance between giving users the tools they need to do their job and keeping them from abusing the system. With respect to archiving, IMHO PSTs are not an acceptable method of archival even if you store them on the server. A lot of people seem to agree with me and that is one of the reasons that 3rd party archival solutions are so popular now. I have never seen Microsoft publish an official recommendation for a maximum mailbox size. I think the 5,000 message per folder limit is also just a guideline. I have not seen it any any specific recommendations from Microsoft.
