Mailbox size is different in Outlook and ESM
Hi,I have an issue with the size of a mailbox reported by outlook and exchange system manager. The environment is set up as such: Exchange 2003 SP1 Outlook 2003 SP1 Outlook in cached mode 100mb mailbox size limitThe issue is that Outlook reports the mailbox as a size a lot less than reported in Exchange System manager eg 75mb in outlook but 125mb in exchangesystem manager. The user gets a warning about the mailbox size and starts deleting mail. They then check the size and it is less than the 100mb limitand yet they still keep getting the error message and are stopped from sending mail. After checking exchange system manager the mailbox is statedas almost twice what is reported in outlook. What i have tried: Opening the mailbox in online mode (not cached) Rebuilding outlook profile Opening mailbox on other computers When Exmerging or moving the mailbox to a different mailbox store itended up as the same size reported by outlook, but I am not sure if the problem will happen again later.Any help would be appreciated.Helio Panissa

This sounds like it could be the deleted itemsdumpster in Exchange not in outlook. So when you deleted items from your Outlook delelted items they will be availible for recovery by the end user via outlook. I beleive Outlook cannot calculate the size of this but Exchange can. This is where the differemt values come from. Robbie

I tried to delete the deleted items dumpster from Outlook, but the size in Exchange was not changed. Please advise how can I release such space in Exchange.

This may not help in this case but I have identified with a high degree of confidence one situation where the sizes will be different. If you are working offline with Outlook and delete an attachment from a mail item, then save the mail item, when you synchronise with Exchange it does not notice the different size of the mail item. Outlookhowever reports using the new size and so will show the mail box being smaller. This can be rectified by moving the mail item to another folder and re-synchronising - Exchange now notices the new size. This may also occur when working online but I have no evidence for or against this.
