Mailbox size after mailbox move
Hi, I have moved an 8gb mailbox from one store to a new store on an Exchange 2007 server. After the move which said successful the mailbox is now only 300mb and missing a lot of email. The OST file on users Outlook 2003 workstation still shows 8gb of local data, and shows all folders as 'up to date'. So there is effectively 7.7gb of extra email in the OST that isnt in new mailbox. Any ideas???

Silly question but did the user move any of the emails to another mailbox? When you move the mailbox it also does a defrag of the mailbox to remove any whitespace in that mailbox. So can you check how many items are in the ost and on Exchange?

Hi, yes the difference in number of items is large (36420 vs 4602) So basically I need to get the OST to sync back to the mailbox. Although it reports no sync error and folders up to date, the server mailbox remains tiny.....

Hi Topdog75, When you moved, Did you see any error in move-request. Did you check recover deleted ietms (in outlook 2003 you have to enable registry manually). I don't see how OST file would have email items .. Please check and update.Anil

Since the size of mailbox on new location says 300mb which has lot of emails missing. Within Microsoft there is no solution to take PST out of OST I would suggest move the mailbox back to original database so there will be no issue with restoring backup. Restore data from backup. Take the PST for user. Now move the mailbox to different store even if it fails you can restore from PST. Let me know if this works... If you are absolutely sure that the .ost has the items and the server does not, set Outlook to offline mode ( or pull that network cable!) and then from Outlook create a new PST and copy the contents of the mailbox to the pst as soon as possible to save those messages.

Do what Andy mentioned, don't rely on OST's synching back to the mailbox particularly in certain circumstances such as when DBs are newer than the OST and even if it does some folders won't sync except for new folders and some won't unless you "touch" them.James Chong MCITP | EA | EMA; MCSE | M+, S+ Security+, Project+, ITIL msexchangetips.blogspot.com

Hi, The size of ost file does not mean the really size of the mailbox. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Whats going on here! Any update on the issue? Were the user using Cache mode on Outlook, if yes than you should export the PST and get mails. Did you tried Andy's suggestion? Just wondering could it be corruption, hard to believe.Gulab | MCTS-MCITP Messaging: 2010 | MCTS-MCITP Messaging: 2007 | MCC 2011 | Skype: Gulab.Mallah

But Yes, Restore is an option if nothing works. Cheers,Gulab | MCTS-MCITP Messaging: 2010 | MCTS-MCITP Messaging: 2007 | MCC 2011 | Skype: Gulab.Mallah
