Mailbox restore fails in Exchange 2007
I have a newly migrated SBS 2008. The migration appeared to be successful. About 2 weeks after the migration a user complained the files on the network share went read only and she had no access. I audited the security and she had the same rights as other users. She was teh only user having this issue. I chose to remove the user and computer from the network and rejoin. This solved the problem but created a worse problem. Now her email is gone. I created the RSG, restored to the RSG from backup(native), mounted the RSG and when I attempt to merge the mailbox I receive the error Error restoring the mailbox (/O=FIRST ORGANIZATION/OU=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=BMOEHLMANN). Error message is: The specified user "/O=FIRST ORGANIZATION/OU=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=BMOEHLMANN" could not be found..I realize I am trying to restore to a different user with the same name but am not sure what my next step is.Any advice would be appreciatedThanks

I created the RSG, restored to the RSG from backup (native), mounted the RSG and when I attempt to merge the mailbox I receive the error ....I realize I am trying to restore to a different user with the same name but am not sure what my next step is. You can very well restore the mailbox to a different user. But what do you mean by backup (native)? The SBS VSS backup? Here are the steps for perform that kind of restore:First restore to an alternative location. Then create the RSG and point it to the alternative location. How to use a Recovery Storage Group in SBS 2008 http://blogs.technet.com/sbs/archive/2009/01/26/how-to-use-a-recovery-storage-group-in-sbs-2008.aspxMCTS: Messaging | MCSE: S+M | Small Business Specialist

This is the exact instructions I followed. However, when I get to the actual "merge mailbox it fails with the above error code stating the user does not exist in the container.Yes, I am using the SBS VSS for backup.

Okay. One possible problem could be that the Common Name CN=BMOEHLMANN is ambiguous. You could try to restore all mail to a folder inside an existing mailbox or just create a new non-ambiguous mailbox and restore BMOEHLMANN's mailbox into one of these mailboxes. Later export all content with Outlook and import it to the correct mailboxTake a look below, when it comes to this screen in the RSG Wizard:If you want to filter the items that you want to restore, like items from a specific range of dates, restore the items with a specific subject from all mailboxes to a specific mailbox – you should select the Show advanced Options:http://www.petri.co.il/using_rsg_in_exchange_2007.htm In this dialog box you have to make the advanced changes:http://www.petri.co.il/images/using_rsg_ex2007_15.gifThe PowerShell Commands would be like this. If you want to restore a mailbox in an RSG into a different active mailbox, run the following Exchange Management Shell command: Restore-Mailbox -RSGMailbox 'John Smith' -RSGDatabase 'RSG\Mailbox Database' -id 'Allison Brown' -TargetFolder 'JSmith Email'http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997694%28EXCHG.80%29.aspx MCTS: Messaging | MCSE: S+M | Small Business Specialist
