Mailbox move failure - EX2010 to 2013 - IExchangeFastTransferEx.SetProps failed ‎(hr=0x8004010f, ec=0)‎

Hi,

I've been having problems moving my mailbox from Exchange 2010 to 2013 as part of an upgrade I'm doing.  I've moved a couple of other mailboxes without issues, and the account can move between different DAG groups on Exchange 2010.

The process does the initial move quite quickly, and then stalls when it gets to 95% going into a loop of retries for up to 5 hours before failing.

The essential error information is as follows,

Error: MigrationPermanentException: Error: MapiExceptionNotFound: IExchangeFastTransferEx.SetProps failed (hr=0x8004010f, ec=0)

I've tried a lot of trouble shooting and haven't found anyone with a similar problem via google etc, things I've done.

Tried different EX2013 MB stores

Created a 2nd exchange org admin account

Tried a domain admin account

Removed my Exchange archive

Cleaned up various folders\views\rules

reset the AD account ACL's

Checked out the mailbox via MFCMapi and purged several items.

Moved the mailbox via PS with the ignoresignature setting

I'd rather not export the mailbox to PST in case this happens to multiple accounts, it will also mess up recurring meetings etc as well.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Jeff

Hi

Is it just this mailbox? it is probably corrupt. easiest might be to export mail to pst, create a new mailbox for the user and import it.

If it is corrupt I'd be surprised if it moved between 2010 DAG stores.

As I mentioned, i'd rather not do the export in case it happens to a lot of other MB's, and due to things like reminders\recurring meetings etc.

Forgot to mention, I've also tried a repair-mailbox on it, which didn't appear to find much.

Thanks

Hi,

Have you tried to restart the Exchange Mailbox Replication service?

Is there any related error message in the application log?

To narrow down the issue, could you please post the related event log here at your convenience?

Thanks for collecting these information.

Best regards,
Belinda

Hi,

Yes, restarted the MRS and rebooted the EX2013 servers, could reboot the 2010CAS servers but I'm not convinced that will help.

The error at the top is pretty  much what is in the event log, and is about the same as the output from the move, without the endless looping of retries.  I think it is trying to update some pointers or something and failing.

Thanks

Jeff

Hi,

Could you please follow the steps below to check the result?

1. Increase the BadItemLimit value.
2. Move the mailboxes to another mailbox database in Exchange 2010 and then move to Exchange 2013.

If the issue persists, please view the Event log on the Client Access server running the instance of the Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication service that's processing the failed move request.

Besides, I recommend you increase diagnostic logging level on Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Replication service. Then please resume the failed move request. For details about how to modify the diagnostic logging level, see Manage Diagnostic Logging Levels.

Here is an article about how to manage failed mailbox move requests for your reference.

Hope this helps. If there is any update, please feel free to let me know.

Hi Jeff,

Have you tried to run the New-MailboxRepairRequest - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff625221%28v=exchg.141%29.aspx ? it does sounds like a corruption within the source mailbox.

Btw, are you running Exchange 2013 CU3 ?

Hi,

Currently got a move ongoing which is probably going to fail, I've set the logging to 4 on the target and source, haven't seen anything on the source box yet, the target 2013 is pretty much logging the original errors every 40 seconds, it isn't logging much else other than the fact it is constantly retrying.

I've also increased the bad item limit and restarted the MRS on both servers.

Once this fails I'll try another EX2010 sideways move, they have worked before so I'm guessing it will work again, then try moving to 2013 again.

I'll have a look if there are anymore errors once it does finish.

Ilantz: I tried a mailbox repair and didn't see any obvious repairs, we are currently on CU2, but I'm probably going to put on CU3 in a few days and see what happens.

I've also put my mailbox on a diet, it's only about 90MB at the moment.

Thanks for assistance so far.

Hi Jeff,

Don't take the diet too aggressively you could damage your health :)

Keep us updated.. I do hope CU3 will help you on this subject.

Hi,

Tried a lot more other things, all without success, including

Installed EX2013CU3

Exported mail items to a PST so MB only had task\calendar items

moved various arbitration mailboxes that i'd read needed moving

set permissions on MB & AD account so they were more open

Have tried to reset permissions with EXFolders

Can't think of much else to do now, other than log a support call with MS but that will cost, or close the MB and recreate it on EX2013 which I really don't want to do.

I've also moved another account without problems so the process & server is working.

Not seeing anything extra in the EV logs either despite it being set to expert level.

Any more thoughts?

Further update to this in case anyone actually reads it!

In the move log I see the following lines in the initial part of the move,

27/12/2013 10:32:46 [Servername] Copying messages is finished. Copying rules and security descriptors.
27/12/2013 10:32:47 [Servername] A corrupted item was encountered: Folder property ""

There is one skipped item which has the following details,

Date: 01/01/0001 00:00:00

Kind: Corrupt folder property

Sadly it doesn't say which folder and which property which isn't very helpful.  extensive searching hasn't brought me any closer to a solution, I've had a look around the mailbox using mfcmapi but that is a bit like looking for a needle in a haystack.

Thanks

Jeff

So, it was corruption?
But you said in your previous post that you could move this mailbox across the database in 2010!

To me it looks like one of the system folder (item) was causing the issue!!!

Hi,

The problem is still happening and I can't move the mailbox, despite having a bad item limit set it is still failing.

The error message doesn't actually say which folder (or item) the problem is with and so far I've been unable to track it down.

As you say I think it is one of the folders somewhere, I've recreated (using resetfolders) some of the standard outlook folders.

When you say system folders do you mean things like reminders and schedule?

Thanks

Jeff

That folder could be anyone of them.
Question: Is it happening with all the mailboxes?

Can you post the error you get after the move fails, detailed information.

Hi Jeff,

(I'm still reading the post..) I would suggest that if you've already reduced that mailbox to practically nothing, that you would recreate it.

He's a tip that would make the move easier. Keep the source mailbox LegacyExchangeDN value. Then once you will remove the mailbox and create a new one, add the LegacyExchangeDN value as an additional X500 type address. this way, replies to old messages and auto completion of users won't brake.

You sure got points for trying :) I guess it's also good to know when to let go...

Hi,

This is the output of the logfile, the formatting is not great but it essentially does the first part of the move, then repeats the final sync for about 4-5 hours until it gives up, I've removed most of it as it is just the same. the errors at the start of the message are what appears in the event log on the MRS target server.

Unfortunately I can't see anything obvious in it.

I'd still like to persevere a little bit more but I'm rapidly running out of things to try.  I don't want to recreate the mailbox if possible as there are meetings that were created by other people which would need to be recreated and I'm worried the same thing happens elsewhere with someone who can't have the meetings recreated so easily.

I've only moved about 4 mailboxes so far, the others worked fine but I've got about ~2500 more to do, I was moving mine to test\move forward.

BTW, thanks for the tips Ilantz, just in case!

Thanks

Jeff

Ok, so this is what I found in the LOG
"27/12/2013 10:32:57 [EX2013MBX] Transient error MapiExceptionNotFound has occurred. The system will retry (1/10)."

My recommendation is, increase the BadItemLimit, say in 100's or more and try, it should work.
What is the size of Mailbox? Before you start the move I would suggest take the PST in-case user needs some important emails.

December 28th, 2013 2:13pm

Hi,

I have tried moving the mailbox with the bad item limit in the thousands and I'm still getting the same problem.  I might leave it until EX2013SP1 is released, which could be this month.

Failing that I'll either have to log it with MS, or recreate my mailbox, again this will cause problems with arranged meetings, but I've done that much hacking about in mfcmapi etc I might have to do that anyway.

Thanks for the assistance.
