Mailbox Store Move
Does anyone have info related to how I can move a mailbox store from one storage group on one virtual server in an exchange cluster to a different storage group on a different virtual server in the same exchange cluster?

Do I understand that you have Exchange 2007 using a SCC model with multiple Clustered Mailbox Servers (CMS) within. You want to move the actual database file from one CMS to another CMS?The fact that the databases are within the same SCC set doesnt really matter from an Exchange perspective. That only introduces questions to where the file is actually stored and weather its on an accessible LUN to the new CMS.The other aspect of the operation is possible because of the database portability capability of Exchange 2007. Detailed steps on that operation can be found here:http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Moving-Exchange-Server-2007-database-Mailbox-servers.html Mike Crowley A+, Network+, Security+, MCT, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP: Enterprise Administrator / Messaging Administrator

My mistake, I should have clarified that it is an Exchange 2003 ClusterI imagine it works something like the following:1. Dismount Store2. Copy the db to the appropraite directory on the other Virtual server in the cluster.3. Create a new store in the destination storage group on the other virtual server mapping to the db related to the original store.bring the store up.4. verify users in the store can access their mail, etc, then delete the db from the orignal drive.I mightbe nmissing some details that I can muddle through but I would rather have a plan with all of the details ironed out.

yeah...missing quite a bit. Your users won't be able to access the mailboxes because active directory won't know about the change. In Exchange 2007 there is a 'configuration only" move that only updates AD, this plus database portability in Exchange 2007 lets this work. In Exchange 2003 you'd be better off doing a mailbox migration to the new database. I did what you are suggesting many years ago with the help of PSS and it was not fun...-alex

OK, I think you have got me convinced, mailbox move is the way to go here, there are only about 180 mailboxes in the store, so we'll go that way.Thank you very much for the follow up and guidance.MN

btw, you may choose to enable circular logging on the source and destination mail stores during the mailbox moves. then once all mailboxes are moved, disable it and do a full backup of the new mail store. this will prevent TONS of logs from being generated.
