Mailbox Size Discrepancy
Greetings-
X2K3 SP2, OL XP SP2
I had a call from a user saying that they were getting "over the quota" messages in their mailbox. I looked on the server and it reports the mailbox size as being 784,276KB.
HOWEVER, when I look at it through the Outlook client, it says the size is: 851,015KB
What's going on? This is the first I've ever noticed that there is/could be a discrepancy between the two UIs.
Thanx

We have the same issue as well with exchange 2007 and Office 2003. Policy is set for no send at 500,000kb and warning at 400,000kb. Users mailbox reports on exchange to be 481,000kb which is just under the prohibit send but they still can't send. I went into outlook and checked in there and Outlook tells me his mailbox size was just over 700,000kb. As a result and quick fix to get them going again I raised their quota to 800,000. This worked fine for ten minutes then he called back saying it was happening again. I checked his mailbox again on exchange with no change. However when I checked his mailbox in Outlook it indicated 1,500,000kb of email... 1,100,000kb of it was in the deleted items box, when I check folder sizes. So I then check in the deleted items and he was lucky to have 8 1kb emails deleted in there... Under tools I was not able to look in "recover deleted items" as it was all greyed out... Can some one HELP!!!!!! We had a similar issue to the above with another branch server using exchange 2003 and office 2003 however this issue was a totally reversed issue. The user mailbox in outlook would indicate a size of 40,000kb whils in exchange 2003 it returned a mailbox size of 1,300,000kb which is well outside the policy we had applied. There were several users in this branch that were experiancing the same issue, as a result I had to turn the policies back off until I can find a fix for this issue. I would have thought it may have something to do with items being held in deleted items on exchange but not on the pc, almost seems like some synchronization error with removing items from the deleted items, but I have no way known to drill down to find where all these emails are held that are not disappearing????? I really don't want' to re-create the mail accounts if I can help it...

Take a look here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891789 Just a thought. Do not know if this applies to your situation however are any clients being used offline? If so, are they deleting attachments from an email while off line? If so this could be the issue because the synchronization may not pickup on the changes. ESM will notice the original message to be there but not pickup on the fact that the attachment has been removed.

Go to Tools > Find > Advanced FindClick on the middle tab called "more choices" simply click "find now"This will show where all of the "hidden" e-mails are stored.when I did it they were in some folder called "top store" or something like that, simply delete them andthey'll all showup inyour deleted items.Andy
