Mailbox Database is no longer available for creating new mailboxes
We have an Exchange 2007 server with a single domain. I have created new mailboxes in the past for distribution groups and it has worked fine. I tried to make a new mailbox for a group I created today called 'payments'. In the mailbox creation wizard the database does not show up and therefore won't let me continue. I looked on our server for the edb file and it is there; "Mailbox Database.edb" under D:\Exchange\Mailbox Database.edb, but Management Console does not see it. I have tried typing in the path in the wizard with no luck either. We have a 2k8 SBS with service pack 2 (SP 2 on Exchange too). Under Server Config --> Mailbox the Database Management panel is also empty. How did this file or path just disappear and how can I get it back to create more users and groups for future use? Every other function of Exchange seems to be working just fine. Users send and receive mail with no issues. Please help.

Does the account you are using have the rights to create mailboxes?Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Yes. Sorry I forgot to mention that. It is an admin account with full access. It's the same account I used to create groups and mailboxes in the past.Eric Hetrick

It sounds like classic corrupt profile. Login to the server as another user with the required permissions and confirm the issue has gone away. Simon.Simon Butler, Exchange MVP Blog | Exchange Resources | In the UK? Hire Me.

That didn't work either. I logged in as myself because I also have admin rights and the database still wasn't there. I also noticed that the default receive connectors on the server config --> HT are gone too. Did my entire Exchange get corrupted? I'm starting to think this may be a more serious problem. I hope not. Are there any other default settings I should look for as missing? Please advise going forward. Thank you.Eric Hetrick

Are the users complaining that mail isn't working, flowing out etc? It may well just be an issue with the management interface. I would be considering Exchange 2007 SP3 right now. This basically reinstalls the product, which can be a very quick way of resolving issues. It doesn't require a wrapper like SP2, the service pack is SBS aware. I just got into the office and am looking into the new service pack. Will this interupt service at all or change user mailflow settings? No user has complained about mailflow at all. Everything else seems to be functioning normally.Eric Hetrick

It will interrupt service but shouldn't change mail flow.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

I'll give this a try this evening then and see what happens. I don't want to run this during the day. I also had an issue where I couldn't create an ActiveSync policy, so hopefully this will be corrected as well. I'll keep you guys posted after I do the update. Any prerequisites to this install or just run the .exe and then reboot? I saw some people posting that it froze or didn't like their AD. Thanks again for the help guys. Let's hope this does the trick.Eric Hetrick

Read the release notes first! If you don't have a cluster, it should be straightforward.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

I will do that. Going to wait until tomorrow after work and run it from home. Just in case... :) Then I'll have all weekend to correct any problems that may happen. I'll let you know how it went. Thank you.Eric Hetrick
