Mail Enabled Public Folder Items change randomly the read / unread status (Exchange 2010)
Hello , We have some Mail enabled public folder with two replicas. There are several user, which monitor these public folders i.e. for support. Maintain per-user read and unread information for this folder is enabled. The users randomly experience that they read a message (and it is marked as read) and some time later it is marked as UNREAD. This happens to the users randomly. Client Permissions: Default {CreateItems, DeleteOwnedItems}, Anonymous {CreateItems}, UserGroup {PublishingEditor}, Administrator {Owner} (Exchange 2010 SP1 on Win08R2SP1, 2 CAS&HTS and 2 MBS in an DAG (these are the only Exchange Servers in the organisation), the clients are OWA &Outlook 2011 for MAC. We have 2 DCs W08R2SP1, both GC) How can I solve this problem? Thanks for helpful hints Johannes Thank you JohnThank you John

(Exchange 2010 SP1 on Win08R2SP1, 2 CAS&HTS and 2 MBS in an DAG (these are the only Exchange Servers in the organisation), the clients are OWA &Outlook 2011 for MAC. Hi John, If possible, please try to narrow down the issue first (it causes by OWA or Outlook 2011). Which version of rollup did you install? It's a good practice to install the latest service pack and rollup in order to avoid some known issues. Update Rollup 6 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1 (KB2608646) http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=27849 Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and unmark them if they provide no help. Hi Frank, the users are mixed connected to the PFs. Some use OWA, some use OL2011 and the problem are on both systems. I can give you the information of the Rollup Update later, I am offsite. Thank you John

Hi, 1. What is the version of Outlook they are using ? Action Plan: 1. Create a new Mailbox user on the US Exchange server 2. Send a mail to the public folder. 3. read the new mail within the public folder on the problem server using the mailbox user on the same server ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Download MFCMAPI. And check PR_LAST_MODIFICATION_TIME on the items that change from read to unread within the Public folder ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This issue would need extensive troubleshooting. and You may need to create a Case and call us [Microsoft] Before calling, You may need to take a trace while reproducing the issue: EXTRACE with the following TAG : Store > tagPerUser Store > tagOmsgFunctionPublic Store > tagPublicFolder Suraj | Microsoft Corp.

Hi, we found this (double checked): We have set the following on the Public Folders "Maintain per-user read and unread information for this folder" enabled" (Exchange 2010SP1 RU6) We tested several times that if we read and change the read unread status of a message in OWA, there is NO CHANGE of PR_LAST_MODIFICATION_TIME. But if we read and change the read / unread status of a message with Outlook 2011 (Version 14.1.4.(111121), there IS A CHANGE of PR_LAST_MODIFICATION_TIME. In my understanding, this sets the message for the other users as a NEW / UNREAD Message! What can I do? Is this a known Issue? Should I start a new thread? Thanks for your help Greetings JohnThank you John

Hi, "The users randomly experience that they read a message (and it is marked as read) and some time later it is marked as UNREAD. This happens to the users randomly." Does this read becomes unread - through OWA or Outlook? or Both? Please check PR_LAST_MODIFIER_NAME through MFCMAPI for the problem user Mailbox once the mail automatically becomes unread from Read.

Hi, we now see a system at this. The change is through Outlook 2011 (Version 14.1.4.(111121), the PR_LAST_MODIFIER_NAME shows the user which use Outlook2011 (also the change of the PR_LAST_MODIFICATION_TIME). We tested several times that if we read and change the read unread status of a message in OWA, there is NO CHANGE of PR_LAST_MODIFICATION_TIME. Can you please give me the instruction what to do with extrace exactly. Manny thanks John Thank you John

Hi, I am sorry, to help you with extrace - you may need to create a case with MS for analysis. Based on what you said, if the PR_LAST_MODIFIER_NAME shows system after the read becomes unread and it matches with PR_LAST_MODIFICATION_TIME time when the change occured - i have a feeling that this is something to do with the Outlook or the machine on which outlook is configured. Kill the outlook process on Outlook and read a message through OWA. check if it becomes unread after some time. Suraj | Microsoft Corp.

Hi, we have checked it already: The message is only changed, if we use Outlook 2011. The message get a new PR_LAST_MODIFICATION_TIME, and is NEW (therfore unread) for the other users. If we use only OWA ON THE SAME SYSTEM, there is no change for other users (no unread for the other users). So the problem is Outlook 2011 in my opinion. Is this a known problem in Outlook 2011? What can we do?Thank you John
