MailTips Exchange 2013 not working Externally

Hello,

Has anyone come across an issue in which MailTips do not display for users who are outside the network? If they connect to the VPN the MailTips do display, but if they do not, they receive an error that states "We can't show MailTips right now."

Connecting to OWA from any network does display the MailTips without an issue. We are using Exchange 2013 with Outlook 2013 in our environment.

Thank you for any assistance.

Hi,

Users need access to the EWS virtual directory to display mail tips. If they can't access it externally, its more than likely due to the EWS virtual directory not being presented to the internet, or that the virtual directory settings are not configured correctly.

Run the following commandlet to see what your EWS virtual directory is set to:

get-webservicesvirtualdirectory | select Identity,ExternalURL | fl

Verify that the user can access the External URL via the Internet.

Hi

Do you have DNS records setup externally for autodiscover as well? Are you using a 3rd party cert for exchange or the self signed one?

Further to my last comment, I would suggest performing the test "<label for="testSelectWizard_ctl09_onPremSelectionList_radioEwsTasks">Synchronization, Notification, Availability, and Automatic Replies" on the online connectivity tester at: </label>https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/

This will confirm whether or not all the parts are working for Mail Tips externally (including autodiscover).

Hello,

If Mailtips in OWA work as expected, but outlook 2013 is not showing MailTips, the problem might be related to autodiscover. So I recommend you follow Cameron's suggestion to use EXRCA tool to check autodiscover settings.

You can also use test e-mail autoconfiguration to check your autodiscover settings.

Hold down the CTRL key, right-click the outlook icon in the system tray and click test e-mail autoconfiguration.

Hi Cameron,

Thanks for your response. I am able to gain access to our EWS directory outside of the network and I also ran the Exchange test and all of them came back successful.

Hello Cara,

All results came back as "Successful"  when using the EXRCA tool to check our config settings.
