MS Word Numbering Issues

MS Word numbering is terrible! Numbered styles change randomly and there is no way to set Restart at 1 OR Continue Numbering manually. Creating a new style doesn't help--once you update it it applies itself to other styles!!!

HOW CAN ANYONE WORK WITH THIS JUNK?????????????????????????????

which version of Word are you using? How do you create a numbered style? What do you mean by "once you update it" - how do you update a
