Hi,

This problem might occur if the Outlook profile corrupted.

We can try to create a new profile to test the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Exit Outlook.
  2. Go to Start > Control Panel, click or double-click Mail.
  3. Click Show Profiles. Choose Prompt for a profile to be used.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Type a name for the profile, and then click OK.
  6. Highlight the profile, and choose Properties. Then Email Accounts..., add your email account in the profile.
  7. Start Outlook, and choose this new profile.

If this problem does not occur in the new Outlook profile, the old Outlook profile is corrupted. We can delete that and use a new Outlook profile.

Best Regards.

Still having the same problem.  Tried the suggestion from William Zhou: created a test profile, and even added a few contacts to it.  But when I try to create mailing labels from that new test profile, Word still crashes as soon as I choose "Select Recipients" | "Select from Outlook Contacts".  Sounds like this is a fairly common problem.  Is there a patch for it?  Or some way to work around it?

Hallo

I'am having a similar issue.

If I combine MailMerge in WORD with the Outlook-contacts, WORD crashes. This happens when connecting to connect with Outlook contacts as well as with the MailMerge helper dialog. The same will happen if I open a WORD docoment that is already connected to Outlook.

The reinstallation of Office did not solve the problem, nor did the deletion of normal.dotm. Even the deactivation off the security programs (f-secure 2013) did not help. Only after starting/closing Outlook in safe mode MailMerge may work once or twice. After having made several tests I suspect that the problem ist not in WORD, but in the Outlook profile. Repairing the pst file with scanpst does not solve the problem, nor the installation of a new profile.

In the meantime I was able to isolate the problem:

The problem appears only with mail profiles that contain also IMAP-accounts. If a profile contains no IMAP accounts, this problem does not appear. (With POP3 accounts, however, the problem does not appear.) The connection parameters of the IMAP accounts are port 993 (SSL) and port 465 (TSL). This phenomenon is reproducible. I believe there are two ways to go around the problem when using MailMerge with Outlook contacts:

  1. Start MailMerge from Outlook. In this case in the main document all fields Adresse have to be changed to Strae (in the German version of WORD/Outlook). After opening WORD Outllok must not be connected once more (crash!) because Outlook is already connected. Therefore you have to click Use current list.
  2. Installing an additional Mail profile that contains no e-mail accounts, but that has  only access to the relevant Outlook-datafile (pst-file). Then it will be possible to start MailMerge from WORD with this new profile without any problems.

This is an issue in WORD/Outlook 2007 as well as in WORD/Outlook 2010. I hope MS will solve this problem soon.

Apols for bumping a really old thread. We just ran in to a similar problem and the issue was narrowed down to machines with an IMAP connector in Outlook.

@OP and Hallo - By chance, are you in an environment with a Document Management System , and specifically, iManage / FileSite?
