MS Outlook 2013 - search matches disappear when modified (but not lost)

I have Outlook 2013

- I search for a keyword

- matches are displayed

- I modify a match and then it immediately disappears. E.g.: I reply to the email or categorize it, then it immediately disappears. Or I click on it so it is no longer unread, but read - this is again a modification, and it disappears.

- when I say "disappear" I  mean that it only disappears from the search results, it is not deleted.

- if I clear the search field, and all the emails are displayed and then I search again for the same keyword, I again have all the results.

This problem just recently started happening this week. Nothing about my computer or version of Outlook has changed. I tried running Outlook in safe mode and the problem persists.

I have the same problem with Outlook 2010.

At first I thought it was to do with our mail archiving system since it was disappearing messages that it pulled back from the archive. But I then noticed the same problem with messages that had never been archived and I added a catergory to.

Hi,

Which type of email account are you using? If you are using an Exchange account, which version of Exchange server are you using? Are you using Outlook in Cached Exchange mode or Online Exchange mode?

There used to be an issue with Exchange 2010, returned message items can disappear from the search results view when you use Outlook in online mode. See:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2636883

If this is the case, please make sure you have installed all available updates for both Outlook and Exchange server, and then test the issue again.

Hi

As per the information and details provided by you, to solve the problem of Outlook 2013, please follow these steps: -

Since the issue does not occur in Outlook Safe Mode. This issue should be related to the third-party Outlook add-ins. If you want to find out which add-in causes this issue, we can review the list of disabled items and disable all COM add-ins in cached mode, then re-enable COM add-ins one-by-one until you found the add-in which cause the problem again.

We can follow these steps to disable COM add-ins: -

  • On the File tab, click the Options category.
  • Click Add-ins.
  • Select COM Add-ins from the Manage box, and then click Go.
  • Click to clear the check box for any add-ins that you want to disable.
  • Click OK, and then restart Outlook.

I hope this information will be helpful for you.

Thanks and regards

I have this same issue in Outlook 2013, Exchange Server, Cached Mode.  The problem does not appear in safe mode.  I followed the instructions listed above and diabled all COM add-ins.  After restarting Outlook the problem is still present.

Hi Steve,

Connected to a local Exchange server with either OL2010 (14.0.7143.5000) or OL2013 (15.0.4693.1000)

Exchange is 2010 SP3 RU6 so the link unfortunately does not apply.

Working in online mode with local Outlook indexing disabled.

Problem also apparent in safe mode.
