MAIL.QUE database max item size
I am looking at sizing a large Exchange 2007 infrastructure and have read numberous documents on the sizing of the mail.que db. I am confused by the figures and I'm looking for advise on the "queue maximum" figure quoted in the article below in the database size table. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb738141(EXCHG.80).aspx This mentions a figure of 500,000 max queue but I'm not sure where this comes from. The other figures quoted are 5 messages per second at 50KB over a 24 hour period. If I work out how many messages over a 24 hour period with these figures I work out 432,000. Unless my maths are wrong (very possible) then it is unclear where this magic 500,000 figure comes from. Is this a hard coded limit to the max number of items or is it a configurable setting and if so what is the default and how is it set. My main concern is that the sizing calculation is based on the number of message per second x the maximum queue size. As my number of messages is expected to be higher than the quote then I need to be clear what this figure is. Can anyone give me direction on this? Many thanks

Hi Ricochet, Sorry for the wrong answer in the previous post. After confirming with our guys in the discussion group, The figure of 500,000 seems to be an example. If you check the same link “Consider an Edge Transport server that receives an average of 5 messages per second (with an average size of 50 KB) over a 24-hour period, with a maximum queue of 500,000 items.” Which means 5x60x60x24 = 432,000 so it should be rounded off to 500,000.
