Lync 2013 stopped working after update

Lync starts up fine, but when I click a contact or receive a message, Lync crashes

I already updated and repaired office.

I do have office 2010 and 2013 installed, but 2010 doesn't have Lync so there shouldn't be a conflict there.

Same error here. I just had to re-install windows so it installed a good 300+ updates and no way to know which one could have been the culprit.

Alexander, do you know what update (KBXXXXXXX) you recently installed?

Here is my error:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\lync.exe.Manifest".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office15\UccApi.DLL" on line 1. Component identity found in manifest does not match the identity of the component requested. Reference is UccApi,processorArchitecture="AMD64",type="win32",version="15.0.0.0". Definition is UccApi,processorArchitecture="x86",type="win32",version="15.0.0.0". Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

I had the exact same problem. Uninstalling kb2889929 fixed it for me.   It looks like that patch installs a 32-bit version of UccApi.DLL on a 64-bit system.

Yep, Uninstalling kb2889929 fixed it for me as well.

Thanks Karl

I have tried uninstalling kb2889929 and running a repair on Lync but am still getting application hangs and the sidebyside error.

I found another two instances of kb2889929 installed also and uninstalled but no luck.

It is different on separate machines as on one it will just crash lync and then you can restart but on another it crashes lync but the process hangs and can't be killed via task manager (never seen that before) so you have to reboot before you can use lync again.

I had this same "SideBySide" error that caused Lync 2013 to crash every time it was launched. It also caused Outlook 2013 to crash due to the Lync calendar-syncing plugin.

Performing a "repair" of Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013 fixed it for me:

  1. Go to Control Panel
  2. Uninstall a program
  3. Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2013
  4. Click "Change" button
  5. Select Repair
  6. Reboot the PC

You.  I like you.  That fixed it!  So many times I forget the simple solutions.

Thanks
