Load Generator 2010 with Exchange server 2007
We are trying to test our potential environment using LoadGen 2010 and the population is taking a VERY long time. We want to use 6000 users with 5 mailbox servers with 4 information stores each. We have been running for about 4 days now and are on task 171 of 24003. Is there a way to speed this up? What might we be missing? If you have any experience, please let me know, Thanks! Kevin

You can try running multiple client machines, but it may not speed your progress much. It just takes a long time. I just happen to be working on an engagement where creating 5,000 1GB mailboxes took more than two weeks.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

What were the specs of your setup? Just curious to see how it lines up with ours. Did you find any resources about this tool that were worth anything? I havent found anything that is worth much...

It's not my setup, but suffice it to say it's huge. The bottleneck is likely to be your storage.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Well, let's hope not. That's actually what we are testing... A new SAN solution. From all of the tests we have seen, though, it's performing well. The initialization process is just dog slow. Besides creating data for the users, do you know what else this tool does during the initialization phase?

It loads all the mailboxes with data to get them to the quota you have specified. If you're just testing the storage subsystem, you should start testing with Jetstress instead of LoadGen. Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

Hi, It is possible to install the Microsoft Exchange Load Generator on Exchange Server to reduce the time of the initialization process. After the first initialization you should simulate the workload from a client computer. Please make sure you have disabled search service on the server during initialization. As soon as the initialization has finished, enable the search service and let it complete the indexing process all at one time. Jerome, please provide a link to the place where that documentation says running LoadGen on the server will improve performance. I don't believe that is the case.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

I went ahead and disabled the search service, so we will see if that helps. Where did you see the piece documented?

Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems." Yeah, we already did JetStress and it looked just fine. We are trying to test as much as possible, as this SAN change will be a pretty major deal for us. In your experience, did some tasks take much longer than others? In one week, we have completed just 563 tasks. Did you see something similar where the first handful of tasks went very slowly and it picked up as it went or does it sound like I am in trouble in comparison to where you were at at the end of a week?

You don't have a Microsoft document that says this? I don't know that I trust that reference. Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."

The mailbox initialization is the only one that takes a long time, depending on the amount of data you're trying to load.Ed Crowley MVP "There are seldom good technological solutions to behavioral problems."
