Links to other excel-files in Excel 2013 does not work

I am having 20 excelfiles which are all linked to the same masterfile.  When opening a linked file I am continously told "We can't update some of the links in your workbook right now" despite;

1. The file is located in the same directory as the masterfile

2. The masterfile is already opened when the linked file is opened.

3. Trust center setting has been set so the files are "trusted"

The dialog-box prompts me to"Continue" or to "Edit Links".  When clicking on "Edit links" the link-status is "Source is open".

Why is this happening??  The link is working but why I am told "We can't update some of the links...." when it is obvious that the links are working?

Opening 20 files at the same time and having to sit manually and click 2 times for every opened file seems a bit waste of time.

In Excel 2010 I did not encounter this - so clearly something has changed in Excel 2013.

Could someby tell me how to avoid being told that the links can't be updated when they are indeed being updated?

Hi,

As far as I know, the issue may be caused by the "containing a three-dimensional reference in a defined name in Excel 2013".

And you got the error message like "We cant update some of the links in your workbook right now. You can continue without updating their values, or edit the links you think are wrong."

To work around this issue, use either of the following methods:
  • Save workbook A and workbook B as .xlsb files.
  • Do not add an external reference link to a defined name that refers to a 3-D reference in workbook B.
