Linking two Exchange 2003 servers (as part of SBS 2003)
Hi I have two separate domains controlled by SBS 2003 at separate sites - over a Cable broadband link to the internet. I have one exchange server already handling all the email for the internal and external users at acompany.co.uk (false domain name) I would like to allow the users on the new SBS domain to use exchange for internal and external mail and for the acompany.co.uk email ids to be valid at both sites. Currently the second site is using my backup domain as acompany.com to send mail and there is no redirect set up to receive it. I have dns control of the acompany.co.uk domain but none yet on the acompany.com domain Any ideas? thanks Ed

Hi, Yes something along these lines is possible but a bit fiddly and irritating to manage in the long term. If you only have a small number of people and low turnover of staff then it is not so bad. Basically, you have to setup secondary addresses for everyone and then setup smtp connectors for specifically that address space. You then need to make sure that contact object exist at the site where the user isn't so that they show up in the address book. Just to make sure I have the right idea, could you confirm what you mean by "valid at both sites" Do you need people to be able to log in at both sites? Or just have a shared address book so mail will go to both sites? Cheers Nathan

Nathan Many thanks for the response. What I want to achieve is a seamless use of the exchange system as if they were on the same network (ignoring the boradband issues) - so i would rather have the second Exchange system also using the acompany.co.uk domain name. and ensuring that all users are named in site specific way to ensure that they do not conflict with each other. almost using the new one as a failover. I intend to point the domain dns mx records to the saecond server asa backup but would rather make sure that the server can accept the way i want to use it. As you might have gtahered this is my first foray into exchange - the server stuff i know the exchange i do not!!! Ed

First things first, the simplest way to do what you want would be to actually not use SBS at the second site. To setup a VPN between the two sites and use a full copy of Exchange and Windows Server to provide a standard domain across two sites. But if that is not possible due to funding etc then you can get round it: Basically you need to setup each server as if it will accept mail for the acompany.co.uk domain. Then setup a secondary entry in the recipient policy that gives each user an address specific to the site. At this point you can setup contacts for users not in the site and specify their other site email address. Then create an SMTP connector to forward mail there. I would suggest that you test this, as it has been a while since I did this. But I know it does work the only question in my mind is whether you should setup the second SBS with exactly the same domain details. I believe what I outlines above will work. Let me know if you would like more specifics. Cheers Nathan
