Large message can crash store.exe?
Hi All We are running Exchange 2003 Sp2 on Windows 2003 Sp2 servers. The max message size is 10MB for all our users. However: I was thinking of something....when a MAPI client sends a message to a recipient, the message goes to the IS (store.exe) on the Exch server. The IS takes the message as an object (MailMsg), and it is this that is forwarded though to the Queuing Engine, Message Cat etc. It is not until the MailMsg gets to the Message Cat does the check for Message Limit takes place...so all this time, you have the message sitting somewhere without being deleted. I was wondering: i) Where does this mail actually site whilst the processing of MailMsg takes place? ii) If the message was, say, 2GB, couldn't this crash the Store.exe (providing the MAPI client could send it), since it has already got there? iii) When Exchange realises that the Message Limit has been reached, what happens to the actual message and attachment? Is it simply deleted? Thanks!

An oversized message can cause havoc. The important thing is to ensure you have applied the latest SPs and hotfixes for Outlook 2003/2007. The logic has been greatly improved in the last year or so. Outlook in mapi mode will not let a usersend an oversize message if you have the latest updates applied.

Hi,As we know when the Information store get message from client,it will create a mailmsg object. The mailmsg object contain information for the message, and it will be forword to the AQE to categorize. But please understand that we have serveral levels on mail size restriction. For MAPI client submission on Exchange Server2003 and Exchange2000 Server, the Max Submission Content Length or Sending Size Limit is evaluated on submit, so a message that is larger than either the per-user or globally defined Send Limit is rejected prior to submission.Exchange 2000 Server and Exchange Server 2003 Message Restrictionshttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa996221(EXCHG.65).aspxAlso you can use messsge tracking to check the mail flow. If store.exe crashes in your environment, then please try to check event viewer to find the error event. We may find useful information there.Regards,Xiu
