KB978871 - Journaling Issue - Exchange 2010
We are upgrading to EMC SourceOne archiving for our Exchange 2010 RU4 environment and have the following note from EMC (see bottom). This appears to be an internal-only KB. Have talked to PSS but they claim not to be able to find it. Our consultant found e-mail from his MS contact that mentioned that hotfix was for RTM, RU1 and RU2 but this was before RU3 and RU4 came out. Question is is this issue now fixed within RU4 even though it wasn't listed in the RU4 or RU3 release notes. EMC don't appear to have tested against RU3/4 yet. Thanks Neill Duplicate messages archived when using Exchange 2010 Problem In environments which include Exchange 2010, Exchange converts the canonical addresses in journaled messages to SMTP addresses, causing those journaled messages to be duplicated across Exchange 2010 servers and between the journaling mailbox and the user mailboxes as follows: If a message is journaled on Exchange 2010 and archived by EMC SourceOne, and then subsequently archived by a historical archiving task, the duplicate message is archived. If a message is journaled (and archived) from both Exchange 2007 (or Exchange 2003) and Exchange 2010, the duplicate message is archived. When duplicate messages are archived, this can result in a larger than expected archive, and can result in duplicate messages being displayed in search results. This problem occurs in the following environments: Exchange 2010 only environment Exchange 2010 with Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2003 environment This problem does not occur when Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2003 servers are used together without Exchange 2010. 40 EMC SourceOne Version 6.6 Release Notes Known issues and limitations Workaround Microsoft has released an Interim Update for this issue. Customers can now request KB978871 from Microsoft (without charge) to receive the Interim Update. Once applied on all Exchange 2010 servers, the routes remain as canonical addresses and not SMTP addresses, so the messages will now correctly have duplicates removed across Exchange 2010 servers and between the journaling mailbox and the user mailboxes.

This fix requires an Interim Update for Exchange 2010 RU4. You can obtain this fix by contacting Microsoft and asking for the KB978871 Interim Update for E14 RU4. If they have a problem locating this fix, have the search the bug database for RU4 and 319832. This fix will be included in SP1

Well we got the IU, applied it to all EX2010 servers (finally) and tested. Unfortunately we are still getting duplicates in our archive. Looks like the update for RU4 may have a problem. Consultant has the IU installed at various other clients with no problems but they are on RU1/RU2. And his test environment is beta SP1 again with no problems. Another annoyance is that the IU has a very low timeout threshold while waiting for services to stop. We ended up having to stop all the services manually beforehand, including the SCOM agent, before it would work cleanly. Thanks Neill
