Journaling Issue
I have two Mail Servers (Mail1 and Mail2) All of our Mail Storage Groups are on Mail2. What I want to do is create journaling and to have the journal mailbox on Mail1. Mail1 is 2003 R2 SP2 w/ Exhange 2003 Standard Mail2 is 2003 SP2 w/ Exchange 2003 Enterprise I have created a Journal Mailbox on Mail1, I have two Mailboxes on Mail1 and set to Journal, this is working fine. When I enable mailbox storegroups on Mail2 and point it to my Journal Mailbox, this mail is not being journaled. I have enabled Enhance Message Journaling, Journal Mailbox was created using ADUC Any ideas or directions? Chris

Shouldn't matter where the mailbox is for journaling to take place. Does message tracking show the journal process start? Can you normally send email between the servers correctly? Anything between the servers? Firewall, antispam, anything like that which could be getting in the way? No smart host set on the SMTP virtual servers? I get conflicting results from Message tracking. In Message History window and email sent to me (my mailbox is on Mail1) I can see the SMTP:Message Delivered Locally to the Vault Journal. This email is successfully journaled. I look at Message History at a email that archive is enabled but not journaling (mailbox is Mail2), I do not get the SMTP:Message Delivered Locally to the Vault Journal. Checking the XML Track History, in the detail there are entries in <Exchange_MessageTrackingEntry> with RecipientAddress pointing to the Vault Journal on both emails. What stood out between the two XML files were that the email that was successfull in being journaled is 10 pages, while the email XML file that was not journaled is only 6 pages. I am going throurgh both files to see if anything jumps out at me.

How did you enable this enhance journaling , by that you mean envelope journaling?Thiyagu | MCTS/MCITP - Exchange 2007 | MCSE 2003[Messaging] | http://www.myExchangeWorld.com. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

I enabled enhanced (envelope) journaling using exejcfg -e and verified by the -l switch I have had a user with a mailbox on Mail2 send a message to the Journal mailbox, this was successful. When this person sent an email to another mailbox on Mail2, the email was sent successfully but not journaled. In Message Tracking from Mail2 there is a line: Message transferred to Mail1 through SMTP SMTP Store Driver: Message Delivered Locally to Store to users mailbox on Mail2 Message Tracking Location From Mail1: SMTP:Message Submitted to Advanced Queueing SMTP:Started Message Submission to Advanced Queue SMTP: Message Submitted to Categorizer SMTP:Message Catergorized and Queued for Routing SMTP:Message Sent to Badmail SMTP:Message Queued for Local Delivery On a successful journaled email from the same user to my mailbox which is on Mail1 it is the same as above, but after the SMTP: Message Sent to Badmail on Mail1 STMP:Message Delivered Locally to Journal Mailbox SMTP Store Driver: Message Delivered Locally to Store to Journal Mailbox The Badmail folder on Mail1 looks like it has the emails that should have been journaled. But why would only emails from Mail2 goto the Badmail folder on Mail1. Both messsages have blank <SenderAddress> fields in the XML date from the Message Tracking? Chris

Hi, Do you receive any NDR for Journal Mailbox? Is there any Event error on the Mail2 Server? At this stage, I suggest you temporarily turn off firewall and anti-spam, and then send the test email from a mailbox on Mail2 server again. If the email still cannot be saved to Journal Mailbox, please refer to the following article to configure Exchange 2003 Message Journaling. Implementing Exchange 2003 Message Journaling If the issue persists, please collect the detail Message Tracking log and upload it here for research. Thanks.Novak Wu-MSFT

Overdue update, today I moved the Journal Mailbox to Mail2 and journaling for all mailboxes is now functioning properly. When I moved the Journal mailbox back to Mail1, journaling only works with mailboxes on Mail1. This leads me to belive I have a permission problem on the Journal mailbox? Chris

I suspect the symptom is by default since Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition only one storage group which can be created on a server. Hence, only one mailbox store database and one public folder store database that can be accessed by using MAPI and Outlook Web Access. As you would like to use the Journal Mailbox by users on two different Storage groups. The feature may be restricted. If available, I suggest you setup another Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition and create a Journal Mailbox between the two Enterprise Edition to check the result. Novak Wu-MSFT

After an attempted upgrade to Enterprise on Friday (we received errors and backed out), we restarted Mail1 and left it as is. Came back on Monday to start over and found out that journaling is working. My journal mailbox on Mail1 is journaling all email from Mail1 and Mail2. Right now I don't have any answers as to this occured as I will need to find out what happened.
