Issue with Mail outbound to Gateway Exchange 2007
Guys, need some help, right now have exchange 2007, 3 hub transports, and 2 edges, and a sophos anti-virus/spam appliance, all inbound mail is going through the appliance, but I can't get the edges to forward all the outbound mail to the appliance, I have read that I should use the "smart host" option http://www.zensoftware.co.uk/kb/article.aspx?id=10287 as a reference Open the Exchange Management Console and choose -> Organization Configuration -> Hub Transport. and "Network Settings" screen choose "Route mail through the following smart host". add the gateway there as a relay, I tried that but edges are still sending the mail, or its it that I need to restart services? and I in the right track? also right now have three connectors, in Hub Transport, for incoming, outgoing... thanks in advance, Sam

Hi, Can you post your send connectors configurations also any event error if there is any can you post it. Also for smart host are you using IP or FQDN ? maybe I could help you. Regards. Ali, I have three send connectors Edgesync -default-first-site-name to internet edgesync - inbound to default-first-site-name edgesync - ourdomain outbound to internet (production) and for the smart host it has ip and FQDN (inside and outside), I tried adding it into the outbound to internet, but that didn't do anything, but I think I need to restart a service for settings to take effect? thanks. Ali, which is the service name? thanks. looks like it should be "IIS Admin Service" is this correct? the only one? thanks also I should do this on exchange 2007 server itself, not on the edges, hubs, and only the services on exchange should be restarted, is this correct? Sam

Ali, you have been a great help, will monitor the event viewer for any errors, but right now mail is going through the appliance, I did the change at the exchange 2007 server, Open the Exchange Management Console and choose -> Organization Configuration -> Hub Transport. and "Network Settings" screen choose "Route mail through the following smart host". add the gateway there as a relay, restarter the IIS from exchange, when to the hubs and restarted the transport service, and then to the edges and restared the transport service, and that did it by the way do you know if the addition can somehow be remove automatically if the servers can't find the gateway, thanks again. Ali, the gateway stop outbound of mail, and it was working before, we just didn't know how to put it back(the reason for this post) we need to document more, so it seems that with the power issues, we shutdown the servers, and them it seems that somehow the setting about the gateway disapeared, the dhcp and dns was off, so can it be that the server didn't resolve the name of the gateway and it was removed automatically to allow flow of mail, I was reading about exchange 07 and on to be able to "correct itself" does this makes sense? so do you think that can happened, we can't figure it out, why that setting got removed, and we are 100% it was not done manually, thanks again for all the help. Hi Sam, As you stated that you configured it with FQDN as well with IP so if you are configuring with IP thats mean there is no issue regarding DNS Server also this your power failure could be the cause as I M concerned to Exchange and I dont have much expertise on gateway level so I will suggest you that contact your vendor maybe they could help you more if Exchange is sending mails to gateway thats mean you are getting some troubles with your gateway and I M really sorry that I M not able to help you on that level because the Lack of my knowledge about third party gateways. Ali, again thanks for the info, just a little clarification, the connector was not set up with ip, but rather than FQDN only, thats why I state my above assumption (which is the only explaination I can think off), just wanted to confirm if that setting can be remove by exchange if it is unable to resolve it, which to me it kinda makes sense. right now everything is perfect. the gateway vender checked the gateway and verified it to be working, thanks again. Hi, Sorry for late reply. have you made the A record entry on your DNS for your gateway ? I hope you got my point. Regards. Shafaquat Ali.M.C.I.T.P Exchange 2007/2010, M.C.I.T.P Windows Server 2008, M.C.T.S OCS Server 2007 R2, Phone: +923008210320

No, exchange will not automatically remove the setting for smart host, even if this smart host is unable to connect or resolve.
