Issue sending bulk email after Exchange 2010 to 2013 migration

Hi!

I have an issue with some reporting software sending bulk emails after our Exchange 2013 migration.

I can see the connections in the firewall and I can see the first connections under the protocol logs in the Exchange servers. What happens is that after ~10 emails, within the same amount of seconds from what I can tell, the mail flow just stops to the Exchange server. I cant seem to find an error message anywhere within the Exchange logs and I've tried updating the receive connector with higher timeouts / Connection limits but the users still cant send all the invoices etc right away.

We have multiple applications / receive connectors with this issue and the users did not report any issues with Exchange 2010 so I am assuming that this issue did not exist there.

We're running two multi-role (CAS/MB) Exchange 2013 servers in a DAG. Exchange 2010 is not fully decommissioned yet but all links and users are moved to 2013.

Any help is much appreciated!

Did you restarted the Exchange 2013 or Transport Service on the Server?

I assume all these email are external emails. Is there any throttling policy set on Smart Host (if you are using)?

And it happening to all the users who are trying send email in BULK!

Hi ,

To avoid the issues when relaying the emails from application server through exchange then we need concentrate on the below mentioned parameters on the receive connectors in exchange 2013 cas servers and also we need to set the parameter value as per your environment requirement.

Please check the below mentioned values on the dedicated receive connectors in exchange 2013 cas server to relay emails from the application server

Parameters :

ConnectionInactivityTimeout
ConnectionTimeout
MaxInboundConnection
MaxInboundConnectionPercentagePerSource
MaxInboundConnectionPerSource
MaxRecipientsPerMessage
MessageRateLimit

Note : In case if none of the above changes help you then the final option would be to enable the protocol logging on the receive connector utilized by the application server to relay emails via exchange server and with the help of the logs we can can came to know that why the connections from the application server to exchange server is disconnecting after some emails has send.

Can the issue be on the internal port 465 connector not allowing all proxied email to be sent?

Hi ,

Alright we will go one by one.

How many cas and mailbox servers did you have in your environment ?Does that roles are in a single box or else it is installed separately ?

on all the cas servers ,Did you create a dedicated receive connector with front end role for the application servers to relay emails?

Does your application servers send emails only to internal recipients or else to recipients in the outside world  ?

Does your application servers communicate exchange servers directly or else is there any other device present between your application server and exchange server for communication?

which server ip address is used as smtp server on the application servers? I mean how smtp configuration done on the application end ?

Hi ,

Thanks for your reply. But on my end i need to clarify few questions .

1.Why you are using the public ip of the exchange servers as the smtp server to relay emails from application servers? However if you hosted the application in internet then there would be an connectivity for the users in the LAN network to access those applications .On that case we could directly establish the connection to the exchange server from application servers.

2.Then why you didn't use port 25 to relay emails from application server to exchange server ?Because why i am asking you is , port no 587 is used for client SMTP submission ?

3.How it for previously configured on exchange 2010 ?

January 27th, 2015 6:48pm

1. The public IP is used for the relay since the application server is external to the Exchange network.

2. Port 587 was used since more restrictions are placed on port 25 in the firewall. And from what I know port 587 works fine for message submissions like this aswell.

Is there any issue with using port 587 for this type of communication?

3. There are no differences between the 2010 and 2013 environment in terms of configured settings. So the 2010 servers also use port 587 and the external IP for relaying from the application server.

port no 587 is used for client SMTP submission. On my experience i didn't see anyone is using port no 587 for relaying emails from the application servers to exchange.

I would suggest you to use the port no 25 to relay emails from the applications servers to exchange 2013 servers.Note : Anyhow we will wait for other suggestion's on this case to get a better clarity.

Exchange  isn't designed to do bulk emaling job for campaigns, mass mailers.
There are 100s of cheap bulk emailing tools that will do a much better job than Exchange, including dealing with bounces, unsubscribe requests etc. Or better still - outsource it. The major outsourced providers will have all of the arrangements in place with the major ISPs which will give you a better delivery success rate.

If you do decide to do it yourself, make sure that you are using a different domain and a different IP address as you WILL get blacklisted, it is just a matter of day or so

Create a dedicated CAS configure relay on this an route all the app emails.
Don't use your exchange connecting ip as you will get blacklisted very easily. I will never advise
