Issue: Free/Busy not showing and Availability Service not able to be contacted
Hi Team,Users reported issue where they cannot see free/busy data for other users. Environment is Exchange 2007 with Outlook 2007, no 2003. So this information comes from the availability service. I ran the test-outlookwebservices from the CAS and MBX server and recieved the following: Id : 1003 Type : Information Message : About to test AutoDiscover with the e-mail address <email address> Id : 1006 Type : Information Message : The Autodiscover service was contacted at https://autodiscover.domain/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml. Id : 1011 Type : Error Message : When querying Availability for email address received 5008: Id : 1016 Type : Error Message : [EXCH]-Error when contacting the AS service at https://domain/ews/exchange.asmx. The elapsed time was 937 milliseconds. Id : 1015 Type : Information Message : [EXCH]-The OAB is not configured for this user. Id : 1014 Type : Success Message : [EXCH]-Successfully contacted the UM service at https://domain/unifiedmessaging/service.asmx. The elapsed time was 15 millisec . Id : 1011 Type : Error Message : When querying Availability for email received 5008: Id : 1016 Type : Error Message : [EXPR]-Error when contacting the AS service at https://domain/ews/exchange.asmx. The elapsed time was 31 milliseconds. Id : 1015 Type : Information Message : [EXPR]-The OAB is not configured for this user. Id : 1014 Type : Success Message : [EXPR]-Successfully contacted the UM service at https://domain/unifiedmessaging/service.asmx. The elapsed time was 156 millise s. Id : 1017 Type : Success Message : [EXPR]-Successfully contacted the RPC/HTTP service at https://domain/Rpc. The elapsed time was 0 milliseconds. Id : 1006 Type : Success Message : The Autodiscover service was tested successfully. Id : 1021 Type : Information Message : The following web services generated errors. As in EXCH As in EXPR Please use the prior output to diagnose and correct the errors.I checked the IIS VD and security is set appropiately (EWS has Windows Integrated set)WebServices, OAB, OWA all have InternalURL and externalURL set to the NLB name which is in the SSL certificate.I am assuming my issue lies with the fact that AS information isnt being returned successfully. When I try to go to the AS URL directly in IE it prompts me for credentials. Is that expected?Looking for areas of security to check and validate. Looking for information around the errors above. Looking for additional ideas to troubleshoot. The servername we use for all URLs is the Load balanced name (which sits both on internal DNS and external DNS). The server is available which is why I dont understand why it wont connect.OWA is working fine. Outlook 2007 is working fine, just Free/busy cannot be looked up.I appreciate your help.

Hi, It is normal that we are prompted for authentication when accessing the Availability Server URL. In addition, I would like to explain that we should get information like below after providing credential: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> - <wsdl:definitions xmlns:soap=http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/wsdl/soap/ </wsdl:output> </wsdl:operation> </wsdl:binding> </wsdl:definitions> In addition, please let me know whether all the users are not able to see others Free/Busy status or the issu only occurs on specific users. Regarding the error 5008, I would like to explain that it means MailboxLogonFailed. At this time, please check whether NT AUTHORITY\SELF account permission misses on the problem mailbox by using Get-Mailboxpermission -identity <username> | fl. By default, the self account should have Full Access and Read Permission. If the self-account permission missed, please perform the following method to add the permission to check the result: Add-MailboxPermission name -User self -AccessRights "fullaccess, readpermission" Please restart Information Store service after that to check the result. If the issue persists, please increase the Event log level of Availability by using the following command: Set-eventloglevel msexchange availability\availability service level expert Set-eventloglevel msexchange availability\availability service general level expert Set-eventloglevel msexchange availability\availability service authentication level expert Set-eventloglevel msexchange availability\availability service authorization level expert Then, please reproduce the issue on Outlook client and check the Application Event Log for any related error. Thanks Mike,We verified that all users have the self permission against their mailboxes. I will recommend increasing the verbosity of logging. We are really experiencing what I define as a strange security issue. While OWA premium is working (by enabling the owapremium attribute in the mailFolderSet), calenders free/busy is still not available. Second, when we initially implemented this messaging solution we didnt touch or configure the owapremium attribute and everything was working fine. Its apparent the customer had "changed" something somewhere, but I am finding it increasingly difficult determining where this has taken place, as well as how to fix it. Documentation is sparse at best. Are there any whitepapers or could you divulge the default security required for OWA premium to work (without setting the owapremium bit) across VD, Exchange mailstore, and any other related component? It would be appreciatedRegards,Christopher

Hi Christopher, Please understand that we mostly focus on a problem in a thread. As you may already know, both Outlook 2007 and OWA 2007 retrieve others Free/Busy information through Availability service. What does Exchange 2007 Availability Service do? http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2006/10/23/429296.aspx Therefore, I suggest you firstly enable the EWS virtual directory is configured correctly on the CAS server: Default settings for Exchange-related virtual directories in Exchange Server 2007 http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2008/02/01/447989.aspx If the configuration is correct, please access the Availability URL from the CAS server directly and check whether you can get expected result (like my previous post ) after providing correct credential. In addition, please let me know: 1. Whether all the users failed to retrieve others Free/Busy information in Outlook 2. Whether only one CAS server exists in the environment. 3. Please increase diagnostic logging to help troubleshooting the issue. Mike

Thank you Mike,We resolved through a call to PSS. We had to re-run setup.com /preparead. Once this was done all services were running as expected. This is one to remember.I am familiar with the availability service and its function, its troubleshooting its failure that is challenging. Thanks again for everyone's help in this.Christopher Westpoint
